Big difference in storage available between iTunes and the iPhone

I'm trying to figure out if there are some ways to clear up storage on my iPhone. According to iTunes, I have almost 2GB of free space, but my iPhone 6 keeps telling me I'm almost out of storage (less than 1GB available). I can't figure out how to get more storage space. Why is there such a difference between what iTunes says and what my iPhone says?
