Just received MacBook with Catalina. Running smooth!

will Big Sur slow everything down since it was designed for the new m1?

will you be upgrading Catalina?

It should not slow everything down. That said, I am not upgrading as it is a new OS, there are still known bugs, and many of my apps don't have Big Sur support yet. I'll probably upgrade in another 6 months provided that software support comes through and later revisions run smoothly. I don't recommend immediately updating to a new OS when it first releases without having a clone of the previous OS and a willingness to spend the time downgrading should an issue arise (that said, ideally one should have a clone anytime they update an OS on any platform). Even with Apple's great infrastructure for development and testing, it is impossible to anticipate every little issue.

Thanks! Thats what I was thinking. Now the do I send back the intel and get the M1 dilemma. 💀

That's what I would do. The only reason to keep an Intel Mac at this time is if you need to run Windows (boot camp or via Fusion/Parallel).

If you don't need Windows then M1 should be better in every way - especially once the 3rd-party Mac developers catch up and ship Universal 2 binaries.

If you have a Fusion drive, stay in Catalina. After upgrading my iMac-2019, and try the new OS, I have finally back to Catalina, eyes closed.

I'm in the same boat. I can say that the performance are the same as Catalina. Maybe better. Just today I had a chat with Apple to ask info about future support to Intel Mac. They said that support are the same in terms of time as before and the same for optimizations...

I upgraded my MBP 2019 16" ToTL to Big Sur and everything works less smooth. Slower. And clunkier than before. Disappointed to say the least.

I understand it is designed for the new silicon macbooks, but they should be honest and advice people with other macs not to upgrade.

I am reverting back to Catalina which was running smooth as butter on a warm pan.
