BigBoss posted this on his blog:

Apple is due to release 5.1 soon. When that happens, they will stop signing 5.0.1. This means you will only be able to restore to 5.1. 5.1 breaks the upcoming jailbreak. If you are currently a 4s owner or an ipad 2 owner, you will want to get your device to 5.0.1 ASAP. This way when the jailbreak is released, you will be able to use it. If you do not restore to 5.0.1 now, in a few days when 5.1 is out, you may never be able to get from 5.0 to 5.0.1 and only option will be to wait again.

(According to the comments, an OTA upgrade to 5.0.1 is OK, of course)

But those who need an unlock on there 4S
should stay on 5.0!!!

Yesterday from MuscleNerd:
@CaN0fSoDa 5.0 will be supported for at least the 4S, hopefully iPad2 (it matters more on 4S, due to potential BB-related issues)

Everybody else is adviced to update to 5.01

Then this came out: http://iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=19408

Contrary to many reports, iPhone 4S owners hoping for a future unlock should not update to iOS 5.0.1 but instead stay on iOS 5.0 to maximize their chances of an unlock.

MuscleNerd has confirmed to iClarified that an untethered iPhone 4S jailbreak for iOS 5.0 will be released at the same time as the iOS 5.0.1 jailbreak, or a day or two later. As always, for those looking to unlock, it is standard operating procedure to stay at the lowest possible baseband.

In fact, its recommended that those already on iOS 5.0.1 should check their build number and downgrade from build 9A406 to 9A405 while Apple is still signing both builds. Due to differences in the basebands, its more likely that an unlock will be found for the earlier build than the later. You can find direct firmware download links here.

We can't guarantee an unlock will be found for iOS 5.0. However, in November MuscleNerd revealed that an unlock was looking 'very promising' and was able to use an exploit to dump the baseband bootrom. However, it's not clear if or when an unlock based on that exploit will materialize.

For more updates you can follow us on Twitter, Facebook, RSS, or check out the new iClarified menu bar app.

For the iPhone 4S unlock, users with the 9A405 build have the higher chance of getting an unlock.

To be clear for the unlockers:

4S 5.0 stay where you are!

4S 5.01 9A405 stay where you are!

4S 5.01 9A406 downgrade to 5.01 9A405

To be clear for the unlockers:

4S 5.0 stay where you are!

4S 5.01 9A405 stay where you are!

4S 5.01 9A406 downgrade to 5.01 9A405

Huh?

First off, I'm not sure if you could technically get 9A405 signed anymore. I don't know if Apple differentiates between 9A405 and 9A406, but my guess is that you can't install 9A405 anymore.

Even if you could, the issue with 9A406 is that it upgrades your baseband. Once your baseband is upgraded, you can't downgrade it on a 4S, so trying to downgrade to 9A405 if possible, wouldn't help you out.

Im not on 06 build but my guess is that it is at least worth a shot.

Is saving blobs a sufficient substitute to upgrading?

Has anyone done a OTA update recently to see if 94A05 is still being installed vs the 94A06 through itunes ?.

Blobs currently have no use and may never for all we know but its always good to have them in case the ability to downgrade comes along.

But are blobs usefull for upgrading? My iPad is on 4.3.3. Ican update to 5.0.1 if I have my blobs right?

Iclarified states apple is signing both.
If a firmwares is still signed the accompanying BB will restore aswell, hence restoring to 9A405 should downgrade you.

SHSH's for the ipad2 wifi and gsm are useful if you want to downgrade to 4.3.3.

If you have a 4S 5.01 9A406, how do you downgrade to 9A405 ???

thanks in advance

The iclarified article has the direct download links for the 9A405 ipsw.

Shift (win) or Alt (mac) restore in itunes to select the package manually.

So I should update to 5.0.1 and if I want to I can downgrade to 4.3.3 as long as I have te blobs

Shorty: I didn't see it mentioned, which iPad are you on? I'm assuming the iPad 2, I might not upgrade it yet. I would wait until we know without a shadow of a doubt that the JB is going to be released BEFORE apple releases the patch.

Yes it is a 2. I have 4.3.3 blobs so I could always downgrade right

I do need to unlock cause I travel overseas, but I desperately want JB.
Will I NOT be able to JB if I stay on 5.0, (only unlock)?

That's what I did. You can always downgrade to 4.3.3 but once 5.0.1 stops getting signed, there's no way to get 5.0.1.

No, you should be able to JB on 5.0.

Shorty, I think the only ones that can downgrade are the wifi and GSM iPad 2. I'm actually fairly certain on that.

Yes, firmware 4.x and below will always be downgraded to with SHSH blobs no matter what firmware you're on.

I don't understand, why are blobs useless to save on ipad2/4S? I saved my 4.3.3 blobs so I can downgrade from any 5 or higher version back down to 4.3.3 on my iPad2. I've already tested and verified that it works perfect.

Why wouldn't a person want to upgrade to 5.0.1 and then save their blobs with TinyUmbrella so you can do a DFU restore back to 5.0.1 at any point of time?

Edit: or is this a new ios5 thing? Can't downgrade to an older ios5 version with blobs anymore?

The ipad2 wifi only can downgrade if you have blobs for 4.3.3
The ipad2 GSM can downgrade with blobs for 4.3.3 via TinyCFW

Ipad2 CDMA cannot downgrade

There's no way to downgrade within iOS 5. You can downgrade to pre-iOS 5 firmware but for anything iOS 5 or above, it's impossible right now.

Apple changed the way they sign their firmware starting with iOS 5. The devs haven't found a way to circumvent this yet.
