This always comes from people who've never tried current suspension systems, I find.

Well, they're getting better, but why would you want to lug all that extra weight around just for the sake of a bit of comfort?

It's not really 'all that'. And it's not rotating weight. It's not about comfort as such - more about fatigue avoidance. Learn how to ride an efficient FS design and the amount of power lost during normal riding is minimal. See, you're saying everything that people who have never tried a decent XC design say :p

It's not for everyone, but what annoys me is people on singlespeeds and rigids who slow me down by snaking or slowing down for bad road edges in heavy traffic. I crash over them at full speed - or as full speed as my legs can carry me

Fair enough, it has been a few years since I've set atop one. Last one I believe was a Moots titanium seatstays dampener deal. Light as hell, not so much about the weight for me as that squishy 'Honey, I shrunk the inertia' feeling going up hills.

Oh so do I :D Though I'd contend I've seen more annoying cyclist habits from noobish people who've drunk the suspension kool-aid (in no way insinuating that you fit that bill ;) ) ... Saddle adjusted far too low, that whole chestnut.

They use 1" Headsets still? No! Surely not! Why?!?!
False alarm, sorry. I was thrown off by a deceptively small pic of the Muirwoods and didn't notice the stem design.

Well, i'm getting a new bike tomorrow. The question is, which one?

The choices are:

Ridgeback Storm (for £380) or the Marin Muirwoods (for £360)

The Ridgeback seems to have better components (Shimano XT groopo for instance) but the Marin is supposed to have a better frame - and its Cro-mo rather then aluminium which is a plus for me. The Marin doesnt look as good, which is a bit of a bonus as it'll less theft-y.

I noticed that the Marin doesnt have alot of room for big tyres whilst the Ridgeback has. Not that i'll be doing much off road, but i do occasionally go for a sprint through Epping forest. Might be better on the Ridgeback.

Whats your opinions?

I have a nice road bike but it's just for riding not errands around town. For around town, I bought a $30 MTB that's half rusted and the rest is faded paint. It looks like hell but rides great. I do lock it up but with a cheap cable lock. If it gets stolen, oh well, but at least I didn't fork out a lot of money for it.

... and as if this week couldn't get any better- i lost my iPod in the Jazz cafe tomight as well.

What else could go wrong i wonder? I know, my emac will explode in my face.

Bought the Marin Muirwoods in the end - am loving it. Feels like a wee rocket.

And i bought an Abus chain lock as well.

I've always just used a big ass chain and padlock on my bikes, I should really change the lock to a non barrel type as bumping is always a threat, I've never spent more than 200 quid on a bike before so I suppose it's not nearly so much of a problem, still my current one is pretty sweet, mostly aluminium, good brakes and decent hard suspension on the front.
