Biking Around School/Fitness

Does anyone bike around campus or commute to work or other places on a bike? I'm looking to buy a decent bike for under $1000 and I have no idea where to start.

Someone told me to get a hybrid bike while others are recommending me a road bike. All I want is a bike that I can use to commute to various places and also carry around for overall fitness. Any suggestions?

Sweet. I love comfort, and the bars won't ****-up your back.

Also nice, it comes in 3 'sizes', to allow for us guys with a 34" inseam.
