MIAMI - Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates said on Friday he expected the new version of Windows operating software, code-named Windows 7, to be released "sometime in the next year or so."

Story

I guess Vista sucked so much they decided to release the new windows ahead of schedule.:p

Its more that previews will come next year, with the release still planned for (but I doubt they'll make) 2010/11

Yeah, whatever that means...

It means that within 2-3 years they will know that most of the features they planned to put in Windows 7 could not be done in time so they abandoned them and that, given another year or two, the new operating system will be nearing completion.

Edit: And by 'new operating system' I mean Windows XP / Vista with perhaps another facelift.

Someone told me that 7 will be like an add-on to Vista such that you will need Vista for Windows 7. Has anyone heard of that?

There is a trend here - release a crap OS, improve it over a few years. Then just when the OS is mature and stable (eg XP), MicroS**t rolls out the newest, latest, must have OS. And to make sure they have adequate sales, they force retailers to have it preloaded on all new PCs - smart.

Shouldn't they at least fix vista first?
This is their fix for Vista.:p
This would not be the first time.

Win98 was the bug fix for Win95.

Sad but true. I'm hoping to skip Vista and see what Windows 7 has in store.
Your sentiments are echoed by many.

You and most of their user base.
:)

Doubt it. Probably heard something about an upgrade pricing structure.

The preview is supposed to come out next year, but due to unknown reasons was delayed to 2010/2011. The official release was also delayed t0 2012/2013
:p ;)
Isn't this the normal operational mode for Microsoft? :p

i like vista...don't know why so many people hate...probably trying to run it on older hardware and it's throwing fits

Yeah, I actually don't mind Vista all that bad. I know I have talked poorly of it in the past, but that was just when I was surprised of how crappy it was for being in development for so damn long (which still is true). But it really isn't that horrible (if you ignore that it was released 6 years after XP, costs a fortune, and reqiures a new computer to run it :p)

Networking sucks donky balls with Vista. My new Vista laptop still can NOT see the other XP laptop in my house even though it's on the same router, with the same subnet id. The only major thing they did to Vista that I can see is the new Aero interface with 256 pixel icons. Whooop tee freakin dooooo.

And to help encourage users to go wih Vista (and not wait for the new OS), there is the news that XP's official last day is definitely June 30th.

There is still a lot of life left in XP, and Vista has not taken off as well as MS had hoped.

It's pretty simple really. You can't buy XP after July '08 and enterprise customers wont be able to get any more licenses after the end of this year. Those enterprise folk have made it quite clear that Vista is not the solution for them and they want a replacement for XP. Which would mean that MS corporate sales from the start of '09 until the release of Windows 7 are going to be rather small. Most large companies buy their machines without an OS pre-installed so they will just keep using their XP volume licenses.

This trend goes back at least 18 years, to the release of Windows 3.0. The "force" isn't on the retailers though, it's on the OEMs.

That is not so much vista as networking computers has a lot of magic voodoo in it.

I have had a lot of trouble networking computers because one day it will work and the next with no changes I can not see the other computer

Yeah, it's more like weeks instead of days for me. I think I've had Leopard and Vista networked properly twice in two months, and that's not changing any settings or doing anything. The two are on all the time.

Lets see how much they copy OSX in this version...:p.

It might be time to upgrade my windows machine...
