A geographical oddity
Never cared for the 49ers, but he was innovative. Managed to take a solid college system and turn it into a spectacular pro system - look at how many other college systems have failed in the NFL.

First Tom Snyder and now Bill Walsh. Both great innovators who will be greatly missed.
And Ingmar Bergman. We really hit the trifecta today, in a bad way. :(

The "West Coast Offense" was not really a college system. It was created when Walsh was with the Cincinnati Bengals under Paul Brown, then he took it to San Diego with Dan Fouts leading it before he got the HC job at Stanford.

Despite his illness, Walsh was active at Stanford until nearly the end. He did a great job as interim Athletic Director last year, keeping the new football stadium on-track. I hope Jim Harbaugh picked Walsh's brain as much as he possibly could have.

RIP The Genius.

I've been a 49ers fan since the days of Montana, Craig, Lott, Taylor, and Rice and this is most certainly a sad day to learn the passing of a great coach.
