I think the record companies thought "we increase the price by 30 percent, that is an instant 30 percent more profit". And the customers thought "they increased the price by 30 percent, sod that, I'm not buying".

I think if they had increased some prices, and dropped lots of back catalogue stuff that doesn't sell anyway, the record companies could have at least given the impression of giving customers a fair deal (and still made more money). As it is, I think people feel ripped off and stop buying at the higher price.
 
The price increase sucks but it's really too soon to be talking about any cause and effect. A quick look at the top 30 shows half are $1.29.
