It sounds like a bird tweeting, but its a very regular sound, although it does stop sometimes. I think it did it ages ago, and then disappeared, but its come back now. I sent the iMac to sleep and it stopped. Woke it up, and it started again. I guess its a moving part, just not sure if its likely to be a fan, or maybe the hard drive? I cant really pinpoint where it is coming from, but it might be the right side as you face it? Anyone able to help?

For a limited time I believe Apple was including birds with new imac purchases, but in your case I think it's probably a fan bearing.

Oh, now I feel like i'm missing out...

I just woke up my iMac now and the sound has gone...do you think I should get Apple to fix it? If they started it up and couldn't hear the sound, would they not do anything about it?

I think it would be a bit foolish to send a Mac back or ask for repair when you don't even know what is going on yet.

When this has happened before have you quit (not just closed) all of the applications? A lot of chat applications, etc, make noises when buddies sign on or off, etc.

A lot of things could be causing your issue if you've been trying out different software applications.

Easy. If it is SW based as you suggest, just mute the volume and see if it goes away.

OP: How long ago did you buy the mac? Applecare?

Its definitely not an audio thing, I tried muting speakers etc. and it is clearly coming from the iMac...got Apple care for another year and a half, so not to worried! I had a quick google and it seems other people may have had the same issue, and it having either been the hard drive, or fan bearings...I don't mind a little tweat sound, my iMac is anything but silent as some people make them out to be. Its just if my hard drive was to fail, I would be *****.

A squeaking noise is not normal. Since you've got applecare, just call them up and they will make it right.
