The question got lost.

It's not so much an image, as a plot. I tried graphicConverter. But that doesn't work too well.

There are several image-manipulation programs that can do this. I use either Pixen or Seashore, depending on the size of the image, for this task (Pixen for small images, Seashore for large images). Both programs are open-source and free.
