Please tell me you guys are just doing this as a test and don't actually prefer those ugly black and white icons.

Learn to fish Google and you'll never be hungry.

Try searching with, oh gosh, I dunno, "iphone custom icons".

Yeah, that was easy. The first hit I got was:

http://www.iphonematters.com/article/hack_your_iphone_home_screen_with_custom_icons_291/

Seriously, if you have to ask how to find instructions, then you probably shouldn't be trying to do it. Because it's going to be a lot more complicated than just searching.

I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but really, sometimes the early hacks are not easy.

Later on, I think there'll be easy to use programs for this kind of thing. Someone could actually make a killing on them.

Best, Kev

Thanks! I'll just be changing my YouTube icon for now. :)

Maybe change the iPod icon to an iTunes icon, Safari to the real Safari icon, etc. :)

Anyone know how to set a background for the home screen?

Anyone know if they're going to create instructions for PC users regarding skinning?

I don't think it is possible. I have been trying for a couple of days to figure out a way to do it. If you take the time to get the restore dmg and fix the .png files there are no strait black background images present. I think it defaults to black with no way to change it. At least not yet or I'm looking in the wrong place.

I did change my dock however. The file SBDockBG2.png is the metalic background on the bottom. I then resized the icons to 75%.

This is an example i made in photoshop with the files, not a photo of my phone. Also note that they have not been corrected for color.

Also the hud.png image is the background image for ringer and volume controls. that is a fun one to experiment with as well.

all of these images are located in: /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app
