It seems like whatever material they have used was not allowed to “cure / set” before being used in the manufacturing process. Those that do not have the marks clearly got the good batch of said material. IMHO
Yeah I think it may be glue and that may well disappear in time

Any updates on this issue now that more people have the Ultra? I continue to get small black (unable to remove) marks on the GPS/cellular bands. I haven't done much with the watch except a couple of gym workouts and also 3-4 outdoor runs (4-5 miles per).

I try to keep my watches in good condition even when I am doing a harder run/hike and this one bothers me. Still on the fence of keeping/returning for my Hermes S7, but going to make a decision in the next day or so. Thanks all!

I just noticed a few marks on mine. Received Monday. Pretty sure they weren’t there new. It’s like the more I looked today the more they appeared haha. They show up better on camera than to the naked eye. And with a flashlight they have a sheen like scratches. Not sure.

Mine are all over the band. Hopefully it’s normal but it’s mottled across the entire band not just a couple spots. I don’t have a problem with it as long as it isn’t a mechanical issue. I have not showered with the watch yet.

I have this too.. Before I saw this thread I thought it was a camo easter egg design.. 😁

i had a couple of spots too, until I wiped them off.

I really don’t think this watch is for a lot of “Apple-types”. Honestly, and I’m not intending to sound rude at all, but if little tiny things like this will bother you, you really should return it. This watch is meant to be USED. It’ll get marks, it may get scratched, it will definitely get dirty if actually used. If little marks are going to be an issue, this isn’t the watch for you.

Or, keep this watch and accept it’ll happen, use this watch for outdoor activities, and use other watches for other occasions.

This sounds way more crass than what’s in my head. I’ve deleted and re-written this like four times because I don’t want to be “that guy”. I would rather see people do what’s best for them so they aren’t spending a day of regret. Do what’s best for you.
You're not wrong here.

Watches like this are meant to be banged around. Watches in general are items that, by nature, get banged around. It might even be more accurate to say watches don't suit some "Apple-types" as you call them. For the record, I was not particularly careful or cautious with my Series 0 and Series 4 and both came out the other side virtually flawless. I hope my Series 8 is just as durable if not more so.

These Watch Ultra lines look like the antenna bands embedded into the iPhone or iPad. They're either rubber or plastic and I remember when the iPhone 6 came out, people were freaking out marks on them if they weren't flawless and returning their iPhones.

There are always going to be those types of people. I used to be a lot more like that. It's not a very peaceful existence.

You are right. That is why I think there will be a lot of returns on this model (I think Apple factors this in too).
For 99.5% of people the series is a much more practical design. A lot of fanboys will realise that it is more practical to get the S8 and add a Spigen type cover for the odd occasion where you might encounter a rough environment and then have the sleek and less bulky option for the majority of the time.

I’m not dissing anybody for buying it but I think lot of people bought just because it is a fresh design. Also, in terms of battery, I think the reality is you will be charging this every 2 days instead of 1.
There is definitely that group that considers this the aspirational model because it says "Ultra" and because it has a new design. For some reason I don't feel that way about Apple Watch. I like to buy one and stick with it until the battery is no good. I get attached to my watches.

I wish I could do this. I swap mine out every single year - and most years there is not a significant difference. I just feel like life is too short lol.

This is a thread discussing marks that appear to be appearing inside the antenna, and the curiosity of what’s causing that. It’s not about marks on the outside from daily wear. I couldn’t care less about that. It’s a watch, it’ll get marked and dirty.

It’s not about ‘those types’ that want things pristine, not from my perspective of why I started the thread at least.

I still get the new iPhone every single year, but everything else I've slowed it way down. That doesn't always work out the way I hoped though. This year my Watch and AirPods Pro were both getting long in the tooth, so I ended up getting all three of the new things already announced this year. lol

Scratches are mainly made from the alpine loop - when removing the watch, if the loop is pulled all the way, the G-hook scratches the watch and antenna band, or leaves titanium particles over it. The antenna band can be buffed with 80gr printer paper (only two-way direction - the direction of the band. Avoid touching the chamfered edge of the case so none of the shine is removed. However, the surface will become more shiny, like the one on the iPad pro - smoother, on the watch it is more abrasive. In the factory, I think, the band is finely blasted altogether with the case. I haven’t seen scratches or stains on factory watches so far but there may be defects.

We aren’t talking about scratches. We’re talking about black marks there appear to be under the surface. Mine had two out the box and a third appeared overnight (all I’d worn were sport bands). In the long run the watch itself will get marked up anyway so it’s not the end of the world, but it’s weird all the same.

I posted the pictures of the camo like black marks all across the “band” on my Ultra two weeks ago. As I also posted some spit (gross I know) and my t-shirt removed 80% or more of these marks and I posted that picture too. I intended to use a microfiber cloth and some cleaning solution but never got around to it and I now noticed 2 weeks later the marks are essentially gone. Maybe I see a hint of a spot in certain light but I think pointing it out people would struggle to see it at this point. I had a very bad case of these spots but now 2 weeks later it is pretty much perfect… maybe this is some kind of oil from the manufacturing process that is evaporating or something…

It must be sooooo tiring to be have OCD!
It must also be so tiring carrying the weight of a past experience in life that makes posts like this, that having nothing to do with and effect you, trigger you in such a way you need to comment in a disrespectful manner. I hope you find peace one day.

Mine don’t rub off and one also developed that strange line across that a few others have. Defo something from the manufacturing that caused it I’d say. Two of mine are much darker though and they were the ones there from out the box. Like I say, doesn’t really matter but curious some have it and some don’t. Good spitting 😅

No disrespect meant. Just really thinking it must be tiring to have OCD.

I took it as a sympathetic post.

It is mentally tiring and can have physiological effects.
For example when I first noticed a scratch I had a cold sweat and heard myself saying "no, no, no" over and over.
Come to terms with it after a while and later felt pathetic and hate that I react that way. But I had no control over it at the time.

It’s hard to tell a lot of the time on here. It can be very toxic!

Yeah that doesn’t sound like a nice thing to work through though 🙁

If it's made of the same material band on the iPad then its going to mark very easily

I lost count with the amount of iPads I opened up brand new, and the very same mark was on them.

It's going to happan and nothing you can do, ....till resale day ;)

Maybe if anyone on here actually has it, that can chime in and let you know

It absolutely is exhausting. True OCD is no joke. I don’t get too bothered by people using the acronym colloquially to say someone is a perfectionist. However, I think it does downplay how hard and real the illness truly is.

I don’t know if you’re really asking. I’m assuming you were being facetious. Either way, I’ll be a voice to speak up about mental illness.
