Heavy: The Story of Metal

The guy goes seriously into nearly every genre of metal, from pre-metal to the split between the US and UK, NWOBHM, Thrash, Prog, Glam, Grunge, Nu, Power, all the way up to Metalcore.

And the one thing mentioned specifically is where it started, and who started it.

BL.

P.S. Black Sabbath is Heavy Metal.
That is a great documentary.

Here's a shout out to another originator of heavy metal, a band that was releasing heavy albums right alongside Sabbath and Zeppelin — the amazing Blue Öyster Cult!

I would love to see BÖC's catalog offered as "Mastered for iTunes" downloads.

Sure, but only by a couple of years. All three were releasing classic LPs at the same time in the early 1970s. And BÖC definitely was a pioneer of the American metal sound.

Also, before they took on the BÖC moniker they performed as Soft White Underbelly — as early as 1967, before Sabbath and Zeppelin were formed (though those bands had earlier names as well).

I have no argument abt Metal but this Brings Back Memories!
One of the highlights of my life was the Black Sabbath concert at U MD that BlueOysterCult opened . They totally brought down the house and came out and played an encore. I think they were onstage about 1.75 hours!
With all the great music that has come since BOC still a top favorite of mine and I am glad people still get to hear it thru iTunes and others. thanks 4 letting me post:apple:

Awesome doc. That guy really broke down the history of it; I have never seen anything like it for any other genre of music. I wish he'd take his concepts and apply them to all other genres.

I was introduced to "Metal" in 1984 (I was 12) with the New Wave of Brits: Maiden, Judas, etc. (although I know they started earlier). It was well known back then that Sabbath was it: the "metal" prototype.

What I see kids call "metal" today was "death metal" back in my day: Cannibal Corpse, Sepultura, S.O.D., and any band that used the Cookie Monster vocals...:D

I love me some Cookie Monster Vocals!!!!! Sepulutura and Obituary where my first introductions into this style of music. Sepulutura doesn't do the CMV that much anymore, but their first album (or two albums combined) Bestial Devastation and Morbid Visions was flat out awesome for me!
