Does anyone know what blackberries will work as a tethered modem? I have a 7100. Cingular says that it only tethers to a PC. So what ones do I need? I can buy a refurb Pearl for $60 from Cingular, or a 7130 for $40. Will those work? Thanks!

While I can not speak to your model, I can speak generally, as I recently checked this out. When you tether a cell phone via USB to a laptop, it shows up as a USB modem. When Cingular says the Mac OS is not supported, they mean that their pretty GUI dialer is a Windows-only app. BUT...

All you have to do is have the data service added to your rate plan [a phone call can do it], get a USB cable & plug in your wireless data capable phone into a USB port. Assuming OS X sees it, all you have to do is manually create a dial-up networking session. How to set that up? What username & password to use? Guess what, their are complete instructions on Cingular's own Web site!! It really urks me the drones say OS X is not supported, when in fact it certainly can be done!! I was looking for the link but have to go. I found detailed instructions at the Cingular site, under the business side.

    Good Luck!

Unfortunately, the Pearl refurbs were sold out, but the 7130 should do it, too, so that's what I bought. Thanks for all your help.

If you get it to work, please drop a note here.

The only way I was able to get my Verizon 7130e to tether was via XP + Parallels.

I'm not sure if the 7130 can be tethered to a Mac for internet access...or at least I haven't come across a report or post from someone who has successfully done it but I can tell you that the Pearl (8100), 8800 and the 8700 (with the 4.2 OS) works via Bluetooth with the OSX. All you need to do is get the 8100 modem script from fibble.org. I'm assuming you're with Cingular and I'd advise that you have your account checked as you might incur data charges when you use the Blackberry for internet access on your Mac. Cingular offers an extra plan on top of the Blackberry Unlimited data plan to use for tethering (yah...that "Unlimited" only applies to internet access within the BB browser...go figure!). Some customers have reported that they didn't get charged extra but some also got a bit of shock when they received their bills (you are charged per MB). Unfortunately, Cingular/AT&T customer support does know exactly how it works and can't explain why some people are charged and some are not.

    Hope that helps.
