Oh.. I miss one more thing I'm hoping Apple adds functionality for

On the BB,you could select one message and scroll down to select a group of messages to delete

On the iphone you either swipe each one to delete OR you can select each one and mass delete.

I wish there was a way to tap one and then scroll to the last one you want to delete and all the ones inbetween would get tagged as well.

Browsing for me is insanely faster on the iPhone than it ever was on my Bold. I was hesitant ever to even attempt to use BB's browser because, for me, it was either extremely slow to connect or never connected at all, simply freezing and then crashing. I tried to post on 3GS Launch Day about how excited I was to be standing in line, knowing that because I'd preordered and had gotten there early, I'd be the first one in the store, and the damn BB crashed twice before I finally gave up (and resisted the urge to slam it to the concrete).

That said, I do miss the trackball (for navigating backward to correct typos, mainly...lol) and I do miss the easier copy/paste, but love everything else about the iPhone SO much more that it all outweighs those concerns. :)

Yahoo and Mobile Me and Exchange all push e-mail to the iPhone.

Clearly this is Google's problem.
Meh.

If you want gmail push now, nuevasync is one option, as others have pointed out. Yes, it's not free, but $25/year isn't exactly expensive. If you're a cheapskate, just use gmail filters to autoforward messages to a free push account (you then read and reply via gmail, not the push account).

Gmail supports IMAP IDLE right now, but Apple has chosen to not use it. (It's pretty impressive -- if you use an IMAP IDLE capable client, email messages can bounce back and forth almost like IM/txt messages.)

The gmail devs appear to be working on a exchange interface to gmail, just like the current calendar and contacts interface, but it's not available, yet. Given the apparent glacial pace at which google releases stuff, I wouldn't expect it for another year or more (but I'd love to be surprised :p ).

Just FYI, I type faster on the iPhone than most people do on BlackBerries. :)
Exactly. The OP presents his opinion as "non-debatable" as if it's universal. News-flash: the keys on the iPhone are larger (ESPECIALLY in landscape) than a Blackberry. It's smarter as well, and changes dependent on your needs.

It's also not there when you don't need it. The BB's keyboard takes up half the screen when watching a movie when I don't even need it. How is that intuitive? Slower and more inconvenient? Nice.

Want proof that lack of g-mail push isn't Apple's fault?

Yahoo and Mobile Me and Exchange all push e-mail to the iPhone.

Clearly this is Google's problem.

My Pre has push Yahoo, Exchange, and push Google. If my Pre can do it, I believe a much more popular phone should be able to do it also. The problem is with Apple on the lack of Gmail push.

So I called my provider (Telus) to ask when exaclty my 3 year plan is up (end of august)
Then she proceeds to ask why, yadda yada.

Yesterday, I get a call from a CSR at Telus, trying to persuade me to stay with them. I tell her, 'I have not had any problems, you just don't offer the hardware (iPhone) that I want/need.

Well, I think they're kinda freaking out about many people jumping ship. (Not sure if this has been discussed in detail here) I also have a second phone on my plan which I will also be moving to Rogers for the iPhone.

My question is, should I take there good deal, get a blackberry and stay (they are talking like they're willing to give me the moon and stars), or get the iPhone?

I purchased the Bold when it was released and it's a great phone. I have no complaints and it was a work horse. I did dump it for the iPhone and I'm happy that I did. RIM is more concerned about releasing new model phones and do not seem to care to much about the OS. They have released 17 new phones in the last 3 years all of which have the same OS. Truth is the OS has not changed since the Pearl was first released. All the other things listed in prior post pretty much cover everything and it comes down to personal preference in what you like in a phone.

I would give the iPhone a chance or you will always wonder. The iPhone UI is nice and very easy to use. The OS is not dead and is the future of phones.

I became frustrated with the BB OS and I'm glad I decided to try the iPhone.
I had been using 7520, 7100i, 8100, 8130, 8800, 8830 and Bold. It was just time for me to leave the BB behind and stop waiting for something that will never happen.

from a BB Curve 8310 .....

I just made the switch from BB Bold to 3GS.

MISS:
* Docking my BB and the clock (which was also an alarm clock!) would automatically appear. (No app for this - trust me, I have looked)
I was never familiar with this

* GMail push - seriously Apple, what's the deal?
This MAY be more a factor of how RIM has their servers set up (centralized). No central one for iPhones

* MMS photos - seriously AT&T, you weren't "prepared"? Honestly.
+1

* BB had the ability to merge all mail to one screen. iPhone makes you toggle between accounts - pain in the neck.
+1

* Typing is ridiculously better on BB - this is not up for debate. Oh but we have landscape mode! Whatever - it's still inferior to BB
+1

* Cut and paste is still superior on BB - with BB, you can toggle back in a sentence much easier
+1

* BB weather icon displayed the CURRENT temp and conditions, as opposed to iPhone's 73 and SUNNY display. Apple, we don't all live in California. (There might be an app for this - I admit I haven't looked that much)
Don't use it myself

* BB had customized ring profiles.
yep, much more customizable than iPhone profiles

WHAT I LOVE...

* Camera is great - found an app that lets you zoom, and a crazy app that lets you switch faces! Lots of fun. :D
Yes (the BB was better than the 3G)

* iLife is great - the sync ability is so much easier and to have iTunes library in the phone makes life so much easier
Never used it. Testing out MobileMe, see below

* Facebook app is much more robust :)
Never used it on BB but its decent on the iPhone

* Internet browsing is not faster (no, it's not) but larger screen is VERY much a PLUS.
Agreed. Opera Mini worked very well on the BB (the stock app left much to be desired lol)

* Search function is very nice - much more comprehensive than BB
This I'll have to disagree with. I think its comparable. I think its stupid that OS3.0 doesn't search the Note field in a contact! Be glad you didn't use pre OS3.0

* Apps - apps - and more apps
+1

* Hopefully I will never have to use the search feature of Mobile Me, but how sweet is that?
I'm seeing a lot of potential with MobileMe for my own uses. I'm not yet familiar yet with the search function.

The big screen simply can't be beat. The touch screen is more flexible than the roller (though the roller had its own charm for sure).

Yes, it is up for debate. Trying to push one physical key without pushing 2 at once is a pain in the neck. I never bought a smart phone before the iPhone for that reason alone. Using a physical keyboard is pure hell.

x eleventy billion. I went from an iPhone 2G to a 3G to a VZW Curve, and back to a 3GS. The Curve was a b$%^& to type on with those stupid hard plastic buttons. Horribly slow and frustrating.

I would like a unified inbox option. I disliked it as first on the BB, but thought about that today as i was bouncing back and forth between accounts repeatedly. I got so irritated, I ended up switching two of my accounts to forward to my hosted Exchange so I could turn off the accounts

My question is, should I take there good deal, get a blackberry and stay (they are talking like they're willing to give me the moon and stars), or get the iPhone?
For BB users, it's often just a personal choice.

For many people, the iPhone is much more usable -- but mainly with the apps. If you're not going to use many apps/games, it may be a toss-up. Also, BB users accustomed to a physical keyboard may have problems, but largely because they're just used to a physical keyboard. If you've never used a virtual or physical (BB) keyboard, getting used to a virtual keyboard is often not a problem.

Other users have already mentioned some of the BB-to-iPhone issues. That aside, I'd say that the two biggest general (non-BB) issues with the iPhone are:

  1. Battery life. It's been beaten to death in other threads, but the battery life sucks.

  2. Carrier coverage. While AT&T coverage is fine for many users, it's not good for others.

Here's a small tip for gmail users: use the gmail mobile browser interface instead of the iPhone mail app. Yes, this does require an internet connection (and only works with one gmail account), but you can do a lot more from the browser interface, like archiving, labeling, threaded conversation viewing, etc., etc..

(And, if you want "push", you can either pay for nuevasync, or you can use gmail filters to forward mail to any push account -- you just have to read/reply using the gmail account, and not the push account.)

  1. Battery life. It's been beaten to death in other threads, but the battery life sucks.

I don't want to sound like an iPhone fanatic but, for me, the only reason I got better battery life with a BB is because I didn't use it nearly as much as the iPhone. If I use them both equally the iPhone has better battery.

It may take a few days or so, but you will eventually type faster on the iPhone. I'm slow as hell on BlackBerry's, the keys are too small and my fingers aren't even that big.

Typing on the blackberry is HORRIBLE IMO. I prefer the much larger keys of the iPhone landscape keyboard. Much easier to thumb type.

* BB had the ability to merge all mail to one screen. iPhone makes you toggle between accounts - pain in the neck.

I'll agree on this. I also wish they kept the split screen view, half was inbox other was message. That would be much quicker for me. I luv mah fone neways lolz

The blackberry keyboard will always be faster. I'm an extremely fast typer and while the iphone is actually acceptable, to say that you can be faster on the BB is not true. The BBs are still one heck of an messaging device. But given the near identical pricing plans I'd pick the iphone for the bigger screen and the fun factor. If the iPhone ever gets its email act together, I'd totally switch over because the keyboard is not a real issue for me. I thought it would be, but it's fast enough for me.

OP here - allow me to ammend my "not up for debate" comment. It's strikingly obvious that it's up for debate. How that's possible is beyond me, but I admit - there seems to be a fair number of people who can type faster on an iPhone than a Blackberry.

I'll add one more annoyance and a pleasure: First, the annoyance: seems the copy function doesn't work on numbers/data for contacts? I actually had to WRITE down someone's phone number to include it in a text. Unacceptable.

Pleasure - voicemail! Finally, the ability to listen to the voicemails I want to listen to in the order I want to listen to. And an archival system that makes sense!

* Typing is ridiculously better on BB - this is not up for debate. Oh but we have landscape mode! Whatever - it's still inferior to BB

Oh come off it! You're slower on the iPhone. I am not.

EDIT: Just saw that you realized it is up for debate. FWIW, I type around 55-60 WPM on my iPhone.

Agree. It is up for debate. I get 64 wpm on mine. You don't know what you're talking about to make that claim. All it takes is some practice and a little trust in the auto-correct.

Comparing my iPhone 3G to my BB Tour;

I prefer the BB keyboard but can easily live with the 3G touch screen
I love the BB LED notifier
Mobile Safari is superior to anything on the BB but Bolt at least makes it usable.
Threaded text messaging on the iPhone is better but the BB has BB Messenger.
I wish the iPhone could run background Apps.
No comparison the iPhone syncs with my macs, the BB sync is barely adequate.
Camera, BB has flash. I actually use this feature and I wish my iPhone had it.

To me it came down to carriers, AT&T was lacking, while Sprint has better coverage here and 3G where with AT&T I was limited to EDGE.

I may get another iPhone but for now the BB just fits ME better.

has anyone actually tried this? I'm leary of allowing other companies access to my email...

Well adding your email account to a Blackberry is the same idea.

Conversely, Google pushes to BlackBerry and Android. Clearly this is Apple's problem. :p

I think RIM is the one pushing it your Blackberry, rather than Google.

Yes, RIM runs all of the email through their servers for pushing and syncing. But nonetheless, I think its on google for push.
