This is the first time that BlackBerry software has been available on other smartphones and marks a radical shift in the management of the Canadian-based manufacturer. From 2012 onwards, BlackBerrys have gradually been dropping in popularity - the latest statistics show that BlackBerry OS worldwide accounted for just 3.7% of smartphone usage in July 2013, compared with 38.3% for Android, 24.8% for iOS and 14.4% for Nokia's S40 platform.

No it's not. A few years ago RIM offered BlackBerry Connect for use on Palm, Nokia (Symbian) and some Sony Ericsson devices.

These devices were assigned a PIN that you also found on standard BlackBerry devices so that email and some policy enforcement on devices.

As BBM is PIN-to-PIN (historically) they are likely following the same principle.

What we really need is iMessage to be multiplatform and have sms integration on all platforms or and app like google hangouts to have sms integration.

Imagine a web based messaging app with the ability to send an sms if your contact doesn't have have that app? Pure full keyboard text messaging heaven. Drooling as I type.

Hangouts doesn't quite have SMS/MMS integration just yet.

A welcome addition. Too many people I know use BBM and but I've never wanted a BlackBerry.

Someone who doesn't like to clear their notifications and some persistent ones as well. New Android guidelines don't let apps perpetually run in the background without an icon anymore. It's user inflicted and enabled on purpose.

That being said, I love the BB icon that's being used for notifications. They didn't reinvent the wheel, which in this case is a good thing. (IMO)

Its just so messy.

This may be the only thing Blackberry can do now.

They lost their business peeps years ago in my opinion.

With even WinMo being a market penetrator... Blackberry has a very long mountain to climb to get to where they want to be as a company.

I was a BB user before moving to the iPhone - there ain't anything out there, today, that even comes close to BBM.

Its just so messy.

I guess my point was that the user chose to not clear these notifications before they took the screenshot, that's all. My notification bar only has one persistent notification (weather temp) and other things he/she has on their like Twitter, battery life, email, battery defender are their choice to have there. That's all. It's not like there are multiple notifications for the same app; they're all unique notifications and for each one the user chose to have them appear in the notification bar.

Thus I used the words "what we really need" and "imagine"

I believe there was talk of hangouts eventually getting sms/mms integration but unless it works on the web based version and I can send and sms/mms on my computer its less exciting. I guess if you get all your friends using it you don't need the sms/mms functionality as much accept on your phone.

I'm more curious about what's being said in the screenshot.

"At least I'm not still wet behind the..."

Argh! I don't think I'll ever find out. :(

I hope Apple doesn't wait until iOS is almost completely dead before providing iMessage on Android devices like Blackberry did with their message service.

Sometimes is better not to say anything and look fool than opening the mouth just to prove it.

Hey fanboys, BlackBerry Messenger kicks the **** out of iMessage in every way. You may believe it's too late for BlackBerry as a company, but you should appreciate a reliable, free, cross-platform messaging service with a huge, established user base. Or you could just keep being super original and 2edgy4me by hopping on the BlackBerry hate bandwagon.

While BBM has been the best messaging platform i' have ever used.

My faith in BBRY at delivering on their promises are extremely low. as a Long time BBRY user, they have done nothing but over promise, under deliver, postpone deadlines, miss targets and lie to the consumer base. Let the Playbook be a firm warning.

This is supposed to be out this summer. Well, it's august 1st and they're just starting closed beta.

Don't expect this to hit till Sept / Oct. And expect the Android / iOS port to be missing some of the key features that does make BBM such a fantastic product.

Thanks for explaining about it. I feel like we've gone off topic now! :D

I am not sure why I would want this. THe advantage it had back in the day was it was preloaded onto devices. Unless they preload this at Samsung and Apple (which is unlikely to happen) I can't see it gaining any traction because you will never know if your friend has BBM and most people have unlimited texting now anyway (I am sure BBM must do more than just text but I am not really sure)

Has anyone gotten the "invitation"?
It'd be interesting to see the capabilities of BBM on iOS

Hey fanboys, BlackBerry Messenger kicks the **** out of iMessage in every way.

How? Explain it to us. The diehard Crackberry addicts talk about how much better it is, and never explain what makes it better.

In the meantime: BBM still doesn't offer the ability to carry on the same conversations on multiple devices... I can't BBM someone from my Macs at home and at work, for instance, nor does it seem I can switch between iOS devices and pick up where I left off in the same conversation.

This is a feature I've gotten very used to in iMessage and not having this in BBM is a HUGE mistake. Being able to offer a cross-platform ability to carry on the same conversation with the same contacts - jumping from say, an Android phone to an iPad to a Mac or Windows desktop - would've made BBM something I would've tried. But it doesn't, so no... it's not better. At all. It's just another fragmented messaging platform.

Yeeah, I already have that now, thanks. Frankly, I have zero BBM users in my contacts, at at least a couple dozen iMessage users. So even if I had an interest in BBM, it would be pretty boring.

Or you could just keep being super original and 2edgy4me by hopping on the BlackBerry hate bandwagon.[/QUOTE]
