if this project for blackberry can be successful as the whatsapp or maybe compete with them then maybe blackberry might regain their popularity in messaging services.

which I think was their mission in the first place.

I know here in the US texting and iMessage are probably the most common ways of chatting but in almost every other country in the world there's an app that everyone uses to chat. Until 2011 that was BBM, now it's What'sApp but they're going to start charging for a yearly subscription to use the service and people in third world counties will not want to pay yearly for What'sApp so they'll have to find a new app for chatting and that app may or may not be Blackberry Messenger.

Sweet!

I just registered my BlackBerry® ID!

With my BlackBerry® ID, I can use BlackBerry® World™, BlackBerry® Messenger, BlackBerry® Protect™, BlackBerry® Link, and have access to all of the BlackBerry® apps on ALL of my BlackBerry® devices!

ALL OF THEM!

I don't know anyone who has a BB any more. Yes, this would've been nice 4-5 years ago. And who's to say that it will still be supported by the new BB owners? Look what Microsoft quashed in the Nokia buyout.

Oh, so YOU'RE the customer...

This would have been a home run if launched in 2008/2009. I personally don't know of one person that has a Blackberry. In fact, I've heard people say, "what's a Blackberry?"

There seems to be a lot of fud here, and doubt about the usefulness.

For people in developing countries (including yours truly), a lot of people use blackberries because of cheap prices, and the cheap blackberry unlimited plans. I should point out that they buy the old ones, you know, the crappy ones. I know a good amount of people who use it with this context.

It's really a matter of choice. Either you get cheap data rates but a horrible web browsing experience (I seriously don't know how people can be satisfied with those things), or a brilliant web browsing experience with horrible data rates $80/month for unlimited Internet that's almost unbearably slow.

I have one really close friend who's stuck in their contract with a blackberry. I'll get this, but when her contract is over I doubt I'll have a use for it

really?!?

Great, now I can communicate with people that use BB, no wait, hmm, nobody uses BB anymore, so, nobody cares.

:apple:

depressing

This is depressing to see

If they had done this back in the day just as whatsapp surfaced, they would have destroyed whatsapp and we would all have a little bbm logo on our home screens today instead of a green whatsapp one

they can never rival whatsapp even if a few people change - the majority of your contacts are still on whatsapp

and to the people saying some of my friends and family dont want to pay for whatsapp...69p.. really? get a grip, how did they afford the iphone in the first place then?

blackberry is so dead it makes me feel ill

Popular messaging service BlackBerry Messenger is reportedly set to launch on iOS this Saturday, September 21, reports CrackBerry. Specifically, an event for the service's upcoming launch on Apple's iOS and Google's Android platform is apparently set to be held in Jakarta, Indonesia on September 20, with the service's iOS app to appear in the App Store a day later at 12:01 AM in local time zones. BBM, which functions similarly to Apple's iMessage, was one of the first proprietary mobile messaging services and remains popular to this day with more than 60 million active monthly users.

A beta for BlackBerry Messenger on iOS was deployed last month, with an official user guide posted three weeks after the launch of the beta. Earlier this month, BlackBerry Social Media Manager Alex Kinsella stated that the app had been submitted for review and was pending approval from Apple before its official launch.

Update: Blackberry has announced official release dates for its upcoming Messenger apps. BBM for iOS will launch at 12:01 AM local time on Sunday, September 22.

Too little, too late.

World reportedly continues to not care.
actually the world does. the US doesnt but many other countries across the world still use blackberries.

exactly.

i have friends internationally and im so excited to be able to chat with them
:D

Sounds like things aren't going smoothly for the rollout, looks like the servers can't handle things, lol

I got BBM from India App store yesterday midnight 12:01 am , Blackberry said those who have already downloaded the BBM for iOS can continue using them ...

Full story for the rollout halt is as follows :

http://blogs.blackberry.com/2013/09/bbm-for-android-iphone-launch-update/?CPID=SOC_C_WW_TW1379807723

Prior to launching BBM for Android, an unreleased version of the BBM for Android app was posted online. The interest and enthusiasm we have seen already – more than 1.1 million active users in the first 8 hours without even launching the official Android app – is incredible. Consequently, this unreleased version caused issues, which we have attempted to address throughout the day.

Our teams continue to work around the clock to bring BBM to Android and iPhone, but only when it’s ready and we know it will live up to your expectations of BBM. We are pausing the global roll-out of BBM for Android and iPhone. Customers who have already downloaded BBM for iPhone will be able to continue to use BBM. The unreleased Android app will be disabled, and customers who downloaded it should visit www.BBM.com to register for updates on official BBM for Android availability.

As soon as we are able, we will begin a staggered country roll-out of BBM for Android and continue the roll-out of BBM for iPhone. Please follow @BBM on Twitter for the latest updates and go to www.BBM.com to sign-up for updates about BBM for Android and iPhone. These issues have not impacted BBM service for BlackBerry.

I thought nobody wanted this.

If that were the case, it wouldn't have been downloaded an estimated 1.1 million times for android before it was even officially out in the store.

:D
