I am attempting to burn some photos from iPhoto 11 onto a BLANK Memorex CD-RW. I am unable to burn from iPhoto as the superdrive is not selectable. I copied the photos to a folder on my desktop but the devices drop down in Finder doesn't appear so the superdrive isn't available. In disk utility, I am attempting to format the disc in the superdrive tab. With either erasing data quickly or completely in the disk utility, both options are unavailable; disk utility says the drive is busy; "Please choose another one."

Is there anyway I can burn the photos to CD?

    ----------

I have tried other discs but still no luck

No luck, Burn doesn't work. Regardless if I put in a CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R Burn tells me there is no disc. This is very strange; the computer is almost brand new.

Are there any better apps than burn? I don't mind paying to make the Superdrive functional.

What happens if you put in a DVD movie? Does it play? What about a music or data CD? If you can read but not write disks, perhaps your Mac didn't come with a superdrive (not likely). It is also possible your optical drive is faulty. If your Mac is still under warranty or Applecare, ask Apple to replace the drive. If not, you might consider an external USB optical drive for about $80.

I'm able to read data from a CD full of pdfs without a problem. I would think my late 2011 cMBP has a superdrive. My computer is only 3 months old.

It's time to have a chat with Applecare. I've never had a problem burning cd's or dvd's in any Mac with a superdrive. This sounds like a hardware problem or it could be that the disks you chose to test with are already "closed" and can't be written. Did you try looking at the disks you tried to see if there is anything already on them?

It sounds like you have a hardware issue then. Maybe a faulty SuperDrive?

I've tried multiple blank discs from multiple manufacturers. Is there anyway to tell if the disc is closed?

I'm assuming I have to bring my computer into a store to talk to Applecare. I was dreading this because my local Apple store is always packed with people and the few times I have gone there I have found the employees not very helpful or knowledgeable.

"I am attempting to burn some photos from iPhoto 11 onto a BLANK Memorex CD-RW"

First off, I would recommend that you use some media OTHER THAN Memorex to burn to.

I would suggest Verbatim -- highly reliable media.

Actually, if you wish that these photos be available for years (25+ or more) I would suggest you look into something called "M Disc" technology. It uses specialized DVD media with a longevity much better than ordinary optical CDs/DVDs.

If you can save the photos in question to a folder on your desktop, try using either "Burn" or "Simply Burns" (both programs available on the net).

I noticed when inserting a disc full of music, I can copy the music I can "add to library" in iTunes, but the CD does not appear in Finder or on the left side of iTunes. Is this normal?

Is this something that Apply could diagnose over the phone?

    Is this a good suggestion:

"Go to ~/Library/Preferences and put com.apple.finder.plist in the Trash. Then restart the Finder by choosing Force Quit from the Apple menu (or option-command-esc), then select Finder and click Relaunch."
