Or is it more true to life? Personally I've found the 12 line does some serious over-HDR processing at times. Sometimes it looks great, sometimes it makes the photo look a bit off because everything is so evenly exposed.
The image on the left is a underexposed. Any image recorded is not true to life since the dynamic range we see is so much greater than what can be recorded. Personal taste does play a part however if the photo on left was submitted to me I’d tell the photographer it was a bad exposure...

I agree on the HDR. It would have been helpful to know it it was turned on or off for these images. I keep mine off as much as possible.

I mostly preferred A and having watched other comparisons on these two phones, I assumed A was the Samsung. I would then also like to see a full comparison of these two using all the onboard tools available to them. So this would mean the 12pm using the proRaw and it's after capture onboard editing tools. The samsung seems to often have an advantage because most tweaking happens immediately. Then the iphone using full dolby vision on the video vs samsung would also be interesting to compare. I think it should be fair to say that too click and judge is not a true comparison of what each phone can do and would do in a real situation. It would also be good if a good photographer who has had time to get to know how to use both phones to their full potential is used for the comparison. Please let me know when this happens. That would be worth watching.

It was likely set to auto, as the setting is a tad buried. Ironically, the pictures I have from my 12 on a cloudy day with a lot of snow are under exposed, except for the faces, since the software appears to be compensating for the bright white of the snow to keep it from being blown out.

iPhone is on the right. The image on left is underexposed and lacking detail and contrast. In other words it’s flat and muddy.

Looks like right is overexposed and details overexaggerated. I don't see shadows so sun is not out from behind the clouds for the snow to be that bright. These comparisons really need a third DSLR reference.

Ask a bunch of fan boys on an apple site what they like better, Samsung or apple. Shocking results. I like a couple of the As but B is clearly sharper, more realistic color and has better night shots

I chose mostly A. I have the pro max, but after seeing the ultra at Best Buy yesterday I am now wishing that I had waited and bought the ultra. The zoom is amazing as is the refresh speed. 12x zoom on the iPhone is no comparison to the ultra. Time for Apple to up it’s game, unfortunately it will be a few years before I am able to upgrade again.

Personally I think at this point, it's irrelevant. All flagship smartphones have great cameras and the truth is you'll never look at these side by side when viewing someones photos. You'll either look at the photo and think it's a great shot or you won't!
You could say the same thing about cars - if you drive a KIA you'll be ignorantly blissful not know what a Mercedes-Benz is like. What about when your friends see your photos on social media?

A few years ago you would have been right. As referenced in the article, Apple seems to favor boosted blues: "Apple's algorithms for the sky are designed to boost the color, trending towards a blue, cool tone during the day that's highly recognizable compared to the Galaxy S21 Ultra. The ‌iPhone 12 Pro Max‌ photos are more vibrant, while the S21 Ultra has a flatter color profile. Neither is quite true to life, with the real color somewhere in the middle."

It's like somewhere along the way both companies decided to do a 180 with their color science. Samsung used to favor vibrancy and Apple used to have flatter color profile. Anecdotally, people seem to prefer the vibrancy. MKBHD's blind photo test has always been won by the more vibrant photo snapper.

I also picked A for most photos 'cept the night shots. They are more colorful.
Going back decades, the Asian films like Fuji, and Asian advertising had over-saturated colors, while Kodak was warmer and more balanced. So thats why I assumed A's were Samsung since its a Korean company.

1. Not mentioned was the time to achieve focus, to be ready to take 2nd shot, how many shots you can take before buffer is full.
2. The iPhone had hyped saturation and contrast - but any image can do that later too. So this is not much of a test
3. I preferred the iPhone (A) for the water glass because of the better blurred background.
4. A 100x zoom would be equivalent to a 5000mm lens. Photographers would need to put the camera on a tripod for 300mm in bright light, and for almost all lenses at night. So I would classify that a a gimmick.

I preferred A to B for sharpness, detail, color, and contrast. Having just spent $1200 on the 12PM, I was worried that A was going to be the Samsung and relieved to find out it was the Apple.

On other websites I've seen the Samsung S21 getting very high marks, and I'm guessing most folks who own it are getting terrific pictures and are happy with their choice. In the end, that's the most important thing.

But I'm still glad I picked the 12PM.

Also assumed that B was the iPhone, but much preferred the A pics. I thought the darker shadows & slightly more saturated colours was a Samsung thing - live & learn!

sharpness can be enhanced in post and is regularly. resolution can't be improved though
Correct, I used the wrong word to describe what I meant. Can't add more resolution/detail to the image after the fact.

Result is samung won?
Any iPhone test being done by an Apple fan site will always show the iPhone as winning.

A real test is when the participants don't know which phone took which picture.

The past 3 straight years MKBHD did blind tests with almost 10 million people and for 3 straight years the iPhone gets beaten by mid range phones.

So which do you think is a better test, one done by an Apple fan site or one done by 10 million people?

2018: Poco phone
2019: Galaxy S10e
2020: OnePlus 8T

He hasn't done 2021 yet, I'm assuming he will after the iPhone 13

MKBHD gave away oneplus phones before, very likely the photos are cherry picked.

Samsung fined $340,000 for faking online comments

US gov calls Xiaomi a China gov related company and it is not a secret how they do business and just buy Chinese youtubers for sure.

I would not trust his blind tests or reviews at all. Watch as a promotion video is fine.
