Try to restore the ipod if you are getting this icon.

thanks for the link but the ipod updater didnt help. it says it updated, but i still receive the error. i also tried to restore it, didnt work.. done this numerous times, as well in disk startup mode. i can add songs to the ipod, but i can't run the menus on the ipod manually to play music

Try running disk utility and see what you get out of it.....did the updater allow you to restore factory settings?
