Using hosts file to block ads worked perfectly since yesterday and today I'm getting ads on youtube videos! Maybe they have different urls now?

Edit: Added "127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net" and the problem seems to be gone.

Thanks! Had the same problem and this fixed it again.

Also when i try to delete sth in the host files i get the message below :confused:

I think the easiest way to edit the hosts file is to use the terminal. Type terminal in spotlight and open it. Then write the following command, it will ask your password:

sudo nano /etc/hosts

Then you can move around with arrow keys and copy/paste the lines. CTRL-X saves and exits.

Didn't work for me... youtube options the only solution.

Did you add all of the lines?

127.0.0.1 ads.youtube.com
127.0.0.1 s0.2mdn.net
127.0.0.1 s1.2mdn.net
127.0.0.1 googleads.g.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net

[127.0.0.1 ads.youtube.com
127.0.0.1 s0.2mdn.net
127.0.0.1 s1.2mdn.net
127.0.0.1 googleads.g.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net]

Wow, this works for me. Thank you so much

This was working great for me, but today youtube videos won't play? Anyone else experiencing problem?

from today youtube options wants monthly subscription. any new solution for youtube ads?

No need to uninstall AdBlock.

I'm at Version 2.9.2 - best place to get it is via the "Safari Extensions..." menu choice under Safari.

Hi guys, I'm using Youtube5. It's a neat Safari extension with the side-effect of eliminating all video ads ;)

Do take a look!

Extra tip: it also enables you to quickly download any available mp4 video stream*of a video! (usually 360, 480, 720, 1080)

Maintained list of known ad-servers

Came across this post while searching for a refresher on where to find the 'hosts' file after a fresh OS X install and noticed the last post, perhaps this will be of use to some of you.

A - seemingly - regularly maintained list of known ad-servers can be found on this website here:

http://pgl.yoyo.org/as/serverlist.php?showintro=0;hostformat=hosts

It's formatted in an easy copy & paste format and I've been using it with decent results for about half a year, just check back every now and then when you notice ads creeping in again.

i read this then I cut and pasted in terminal to my macbook air - upon restarting it reversed the time and a few things acted wonky - fixed the few them and it seems to be working ok so far

wonder how this would have messed with date + time + such?

hopefully it works, thanks!
