It's not for me either and that is the point, it will barely register on the radar of existing Apple customers, As a loss leader (though I am certain it'll not be sold at a loss) it's a gateway model to get new people into the Apple Ecosystem. Given the push towards services and the tiny development cost, this can only be good for Apple's shareholders.

I don't see this as a gateway product as it's primary focus. It is a product that fills a gap for those people feel the newer phones are either too big, too much, or just have too many features they don't need or want or just don't see the value in them. This gives them a reason to upgrade to a "new" phone rather than a 2+ year old iPhone 8, or a refurb.

The iPhone SE wasn't bad hardware wise, and it's still being supported by the latest iOS, maybe the SE2 will do well also.
I'm more interested in refreshed 13" MacBook Pros with scissor keyboards.

I hope they update the plus series as well. It has the best screen ever produced for any phone.

My 6s plus needs to be upgraded - I refuse to downgrade my screen DPI to one of Apple's current offerings.

I’m mostly interested in an “SE” if it’s as narrow as the 5. I inherited short hitchhiker thumbs from her, and we can’t use “6”-sized phones one-handed. So her birthday is coming up, and I’d like to get her an updated phone (she has a 5), but if this is gonna be an 6-sized device, there’s no point, and I could just get her an 8, and tell her she can update her phone as soon as she’s ready to not be able to use it one-handed any more.

Except its not. I've had almost every product type in the past 10 or so years and I have to say I can't hide my excitement for this one. I literally cannot wait to buy this if the specs are what the rumour says.
I really hate the 11 and the 11 Pro. This is shaping up to be an awesome product.
Sure, some people will get lured from Android and this might be their first Apple product but overall this is not the aim. I think the aim is for people who love one handed operation, good specs and good price and touchID.
Basically everything that I hate on 11 Pro (except the camera) is not here = win

My excitement level for this Apple product: ZERO

Isn't it great that we don't all like the SAME EXACT things? Diversity is the spice of life and helps corporations fill the needs of individuals with different tastes.

I love my XS but have two SE users in my immediate family that have absolutely refused to upgrade. Those phones, however, have recently started acting up (they are at least 2 years old, originals were 4 and then they were each replaced about 2 years ago) and even if this phone is a revised 8, they are finally giving in to the idea of upgrading.

The most exciting thing about this phone is the name. /s

My money is on 8 Pro.

iPhone 9 is my bet, Pro is doubtful as this is likely going to be a lower-spec phone than the Pro line.

iPhone 9 NotSo

4.4" for those who thought the SE was too small and 8 way too big, this will be perfect although it will be .003 thicker to accommodate stuff that didnt exist before. Sorry still no pen support.

Apple: "We might update it next year. Or the year after next. Or not at all. Maybe. Possibly."

Hmmm... why do Apple's "mini" products have an abysmal update track-record? I just realized this.

iPad Mini went 4 years between the latest updates... Mac Mini also 4 years... iPhone SE will be 4 years in March... do we see a pattern here?

:p
Disagree...Upgradeable Mac Pro 2019 was just updated after the disappointing 2013 Mac Pro (aka. trash can)...

Yeah, sure. It is great to like different things. Or be amazed by the fact that a trillion dollar worth tech giant keeps recycling designs that have been boring people to death for a half decade, and “arguably“ not even the best design, just to save the pretty penny. Sure, the goal here is to have a budget phone that have up to date hardware... but my god, these thick bezels weren’t acceptable even 3 -4 years ago and now days even the cheapest budget phones have more attractive displays. But then again, Apple seem to know what they are doing. Has to be lot of kids and grandparents out there to whom this product may be aimed to.

some of us just use our phone for internet and pictures of our kids.. i dont even know what a top of the line iphone can do and dont care honestly.. and i work in tech too, go figure.. i still love my button 6s but it is crapping out on me.. so yes my excitement level for buying a new phone and not paying 1k is a 10

You're describing me. ;) I don't give a damn about fancy multi-lens cameras. The 8 is the smallest and lightest phone that Apple currently offers, that's the main reason why I'm still using it. I also prefer Touch ID over Face ID. If the SE2 or whatever it's called has the same features with updated internals and eSIM/dual SIM, I'm in.

Why not get an 11 Pro/Pro Max then? Oh wait, let me guess........you don't like the notch 😂

This SE2 has been "coming soon" for years.
I've been waiting for this for years. This is all some of us really want. It will sell. I check the Apple refurbs daily and the iPhone 8 is never available. I have a 5S that desperately needs upgraded, so I'm holding out hope this one last time before I just end up getting a new iPhone 8. It might not be as small as the 5S/SE, but having a home button and a small-ish phone is a big deal to me. :)

I bought an SE because it had Apple Pay. Otherwise I would still be using my 5s. Not interested in faceid or big screens. My wife has a 6 and would prefer something a little smaller too. So, yes, we are watching this release.

Sooo confusing the naming scheme, they should fire the marketting team.

Why just not have 2 lines? One high end and one low end. Name them:

iPhone 12
iPhone 12 CE (Crap Edition)

Looking forward to finally upgrading from my old, tired, SE...

Not believing the $399 though, it will probably be $499...
At 499$ it will be dead in the water, because.... it's not actually 499$ .
In Europe this translates in 499 euro+ taxes =600+ euro....even at 399$ (399euro+ taxes) its expensive, the only good thing about this phone is the cpu, everything else is sub par like apple this days.
Where is the symmetry, function over form, MacBook with 1 usbc port and 300 dongles?
The SE line could be a major hit for apple but it looks like a chore more than anything, a bezel less 4.7" with on screen fingerprint sensor would do the trick, but no.

you're views are your views. But to call it a boring design (when do things have to change if it works well?) is your view. It doesn't mean it's a fact. As for acceptable, I don't know how much you're staring at your phone, but the thicker bezels disappear for me far more than the notch does. I'd rather grab one of these and wait two years for no bezel displays to be a real thing. Calling it just a phone for kids and grandparents reeks of a very limited view point. Also, redoing design for design sake is how we ended up with the terrible butterfly keys on the laptop line for far too long.

that’s because they don’t drive revenue and drive demand away from potential flagship purchasers.

If Apple is worried about these products taking revenue and demand away from potential flagship purchasers... why not eliminate these products altogether?

Why update those products at all?

They let the Mac Mini sit idle for 4 years. It was on a "death watch" for years. They could have discontinued it and hardly anyone would notice.

And yet... they finally updated it... and it probably stole sales from a more expensive iMac.

Same for the iPad Mini. It sat idle for 4 years... but they finally updated it and it might have stolen sales from more expensive iPads.

And here we go again with an updated iPhone SE. Rumors say it could be as low as $500... which could steal sales from more expensive iPhones.

If Apple wants to protect flagship sales... why offer cheaper alternatives in the first place?
