Cool but I want to be able to access content when I travel. When at home I watch tv on a big screen.

+1.

I have a few TV's in the house so the opportunity to watch the same channels in the iPad isn't compelling.

Now, if I could watch my DTV channels in the iPad while in Starbucks or other places outside of the house, that's be useful.

At first I agreed with you, but now that I've given it some more thought...

It's not just another TV, it's much more portable. If you are outside, relaxing next to the pool or sitting by the fire pit and want to watch a movie under the stars (not under the sun for obvious reasons) with your significant other, it's probably easier to bring out your iPad than haul out your TV and cable connections.

If you want to go less romantic... Bathroom. Does it need any other explanation?

I'm not a DirectTV guy (other than my PS3 Sunday Ticket), but I'm sure cable companies will be forced to offer live content anywhere to stay competitive with media on demand.
Agreed. I am excited about this as I do in fact like being able to carry it around the house and have it in front of me.

But, I also agree that more channels need to be added and making it more travel-friendly (content wise) needs vast improvement

Wtf?

On the upper screenshot (left picture) you can clearly see the greek Prime minister.
Please choose a different snapshot and remove this ********n prick..
We Greeks are frustrated enough, to have to see his face on the macrumors website....

I think this is a step in the right direction for Directv, but it is only an incremental step.

Ipad or (computer ability ie windows laptop or mac) is good, but ...

1- why limit it to same IP as the DVR's??? i frequently travel, it would be awesome to be able to enjoy the content i pay for while on the road.

2- Allow people to backup content, not limit it to hard drive space on the DVR, allow us to store programs we like on our home server, burn to BD or DVD.

i like the concept here. but until full functionality comes like TIVO boxes without limits to prevent things from becoming mobile or stored for long term use. ie that favorite Halloween episode your kid likes, or that movie you like.

We pay for the content, let us keep it. the old days of VHS and betamax are sadly long gone. Directv puts up so many barriers for users keeping HD content. it is sad!!!

There is a way around this. It's called Slingbox. Watch anything from your TV (live or recorded), anywhere you want. On your iPad or iPhone.

DirecTV should offer the same. I think one day it will. Untill then, there is Slingbox.

The 'FAIL' was in regards to advertising this feature with Channels they are currently threatening to Drop from direcTV in less than 4 days.
Works great for me. Channels are limited at the moment, but they will add more (or so they say). Not sure how it can fail since it does what it says and is in addition to something that already works well?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

And just a week ao I cancelled my directv service ):

Cool! Wait...lame...

I was excited when I read the news. I have three DirecTV receivers, two hooked into the network. One strictly hooked up to a Mac mini and EyeTV so I don't need a DVR.

So when I saw this article, I was quite excited to have a mobile "TV" and not have to stream from EyeTV.

Then I saw the limited channel line up. As much as I pay as a platinum subscriber, I feel I should be able to watch all the channels I get on any device that I have to log into with my DirecTV account information.

Saying you can watch your favorite shows is misleading if none of the channels they offer show your shows.

-F.

Hmm, so if you setup a VPN connection at home and VPN to your home network I presume that gets around the need to be local in your house. :D

Does it use internet or the directv satellite feed?

So, does the iPad DirecTV use my internet bandwidth (capped by comcast monthly) or does it just echo the satellite feed on my local network?

The latter, it's available [only] on your internal/private network, so no routed traffic and no hit on your monthly allocation.

I'm not in the least bit interested in accessing content outside my network, but I definitely want access to DVR content. I'm networked and DTV wants a monthly fee just to activate the remote DVR access on an STB. It's a tiny fee, but I'm using my network, the DVR is already accessible via a Winders© PC, just stop with all the silly encryption/DRM, let us move DVR content around to different devices (even a Tivo allows some kind of direct file access to recorded content).

Meanwhile I got an email from Time Warner today saying that my rates are going up to "improve services" yet they still have the crappiest streaming app of all (with the most random selection of channels), no access to HBO Go or Showtime Anywhere, and some of the buggiest cable boxes in the industry (and that's saying something, I used to have Comcast).

Sorry for the rant. I wish FiOS was available in this building.

I moved from Time Warner NYC to a Comcast area, and I was definitely happy to see the back of my Scientific Atlanta 8300HD. Ugh.

That said, I have a pretty good XFinity remote app but still no live streaming at all. I get ESPN3 on the Xbox now but no Watch ESPN app. So there's give and take with every provider...

Sorry, you are wrong here. These channels are streaming from DirecTV's servers, so they will eat up his monthly allocation. This is also the reason there are limited channels right now, DirecTV only has agreements in place to be able to stream these particular channels. Once they get agreements in place to stream other channels they will be added.

For those of you looking to take your DirecTV content on the road with you check out their new Nomad device. I got one a couple weeks ago and I really like it.

Finally, DirecTV is also signing agreements with the TV stations for access to their streaming sites outside your home too. So far we can access HBO Go, Max Go, TBS, TNT, CNN, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, CNN, and now it looks like Bloomberg too.

Do they have subtitles (or closed captioning)?

sonnyjames
Does anybody know if those two live streaming apps have closed captions or subtitles available?

I don't know why I have to be the one to respond to these two. That's just pathetic that they were just ignored.

BloomBerg TV+ does NOT have captioning or subtitles. Which makes it useless for a large segment of the population. :)
