[first and foremost, i'm in favor of blu-ray, so i don't want to sound umm flamish... but take a looksey]

with 50GB disks, with a theoretical max of 200GB per disk, how could not [despite being a sony technology] be opposed to a future of blu-ray!?

this new format war is a huge topic of discussion, but it's too bad it's all over.

when betamax was battling VHS in the format wars of olden days, the battle was close, but was arguably decided by the adult film industry. despite what all would want to say, that is one of the notable turning points in that format war.

well, you'd think that same thing would happen for HD-DVD and BLU-RAY? well it did. everything seemed to be the same here. the adult industry, always being on the bleeding edge of new technology, decided to back BLU-RAY.

well, you can't just count on sony taking a win, could you?

sony released this statement.... http://www.sgknox.com/2007/01/11/no-porn-on-blu-ray/

it's not really a statement as much as it is a DO-NOT-RESUSCITATE!!!

come on sony, let the porn in!

Clearly the OP is pointing out the fact that VHS won back in the day because of the adult film industry and with Blu-Ray already facing strong competition and problems with the PS3 roll out...Sony really doesn't need to be telling people "massage only, no happy ending".

That said...who really wants to see porn at 1080p?

...Have you never heard of the internet?

i am, ehh, well versed in the internet. ;) and i've never purchased any of teh pr0n dvd or vhs, but somehow, regardless of my purchases, the adult film industry still manages to make billions of dollars off of dvd sales. and prior to that, billions of dollars on vhs!

why would you ostracize an industry that makes more money that some countries!?

i think TheAnswer said it best....

Time to stick a fork in Blu-Ray...it's done.

Ethically: Good for Sony for having some moral fiber and not doing "whatever it takes" to win the format war.

For shareholders and anyone who has a stake in Blu-ray: Shame on Sony for not learning from its past mistakes and possibly costing the company loads of revenue.

Blu-ray will survive as a media storage device, HD-DVD will be for video.

Pshh, ethics? What's morally wrong about porn? Sony is screwin' themselves left and right these days, NPI.

of the two, i would rather see blu-ray win for this one reason: 50 gb storage limit. you can easily put a whole season of an hour drama like 24, lost and the others and still have plenty of room to spare for tons of extras. also consider the anime market, as this concept also applies, a whole series on one disc, or a fraction of just regular dvd's. for example, 49 shows of gundam wing was on ten dvd's, in blu-ray, the whole series would be on one disc, and much easier to manage.

i hope both win, hd-dvd for movies and other shorter-high quality items, blu-ray for storage plus serials. i haven't seen too many video games yet that have topped over 10 gb, very few of the dvd games have needed more than one disc (mostly rpg's).

but honestly, i don't care right now, lower the price some more, and still keep regular dvd's as an option for years to come instead of just phasing out. expect for the extra storage space, i see no advantage in either of the new formats.

You're citing an urban legend.

VHS won because it was a better product. It had a longer playing time. The movie studios and the porn industry followed the leader and the rest was history.

The article you sight doesn't mention the adult industry at all. It does however, mention the length of betamax tapes being a key obstacle...they couldn't record a feature length film, which is what both home users and the film industry (adult and mainstream) wanted. This was also at a time when the porn industry was looking to jump from run down theaters into peoples homes. The lower cost of the VHS and the length of the tapes both played a factor in the adult film industry's adoption of VHS.

Well of course there is licencing right but i can't imagine Sony preventing Porn on Bluray.
On which bases could they fight the case, should they be taken into court by the first production thats would like to put porn on bluray.
I read a new from a french mag (les années laser) that mentioned that planned porn bluray were canceled... no on the base that sony doesn't agree but because the only french factory of bluray doesn't want to have some PornBD missplaced in other movie case... i guess that will change as soon as more factories are being equiped with Bluray equipment.
What would Sony do to prevent french to make their PornBD... Forbid BD on French ground???

The Ethic??? very subjective... what is shown on MTV would have been qualified few decadse ago (and is probably still... with some reasons) as: not Ethical. There will be Porn on BD and HD-DVD... and there will be buyers...
Porn are even available on PSP (ho ! Sony again) format all around...

The adult movie industry backs HD-DVD for one reason: lower mastering costs compared to Blu-Ray. There are plentiful low-cost tools for high-end desktop computers that allow you to master HD-DVD discs with downloaded 1080p/1080i/720p video.

With the price of prosumer 1080i HD camcorders dropping under US$6,000 lately, is it small wonder why the best-known adult movie companies like Wicked Films, Vivid Entertainment and Playboy are going to HD production?

Also, a company name Ritek just showed privately at CES this year multilayer discs that could bump up HD-DVD capacity substantially to as much as 80 GB or more per disc and still maintain compatibility with most current HD-DVD players, erasing one of Blu-Ray's advantages of HD-DVD.

Vivid entertainment supports Blu Ray, every major porn studio supports blu ray, a few smaller outfits only support HD DVD.

Blu ray owns the Japanese market, Blu ray outsold HD DVD in December

-Blu-ray has 96% of the HD player market in Japan. "In terms of Japan the game is already over there."
-Out of 10,000 registered PS3 owners surveyed, 90% have tried and will buy Blu-Ray discs. 75% plan to use their PS3 primarily as a Blu-Ray player.
-On December 20th, Blu-Ray sales finally surpassed HD-DVD sales (note: no word on if this is players or software)

Blu-ray has pretty much won the war. In some markets its not even a war anymore *points to Japan*

Saying the hardware is cheaper for HD DVD isnt really valid anymore either since the Blu-ray hardware is now within $40-60 of the HD DVD players.
