-Out of 10,000 registered PS3 owners surveyed, 90% have tried and will buy Blu-Ray discs. 75% plan to use their PS3 primarily as a Blu-Ray player.

Err a BluRay disc is packaged with the PS3 so 90% figure means jack.

75% ps3 users going to use it for movies only? Well that's Sony screwed since they only make a profit on their games, and without a decent contention ratio per console, developers will be even more reluctant to sign exclusive deals.

If they are not supporting porn Sony are screwed, but if like you say 75% of owners of PS3 are not using it for games, then Sony are screwed.

I was always under the assumption that Sony lost the VHS/Betamax battle because they refused other manufacturers the right to use Betamax technology.

While JVC (inventors of VHS) allowed other companies the right to make VHS machines and tapes.

By the time Sony decided to let others play in the Betamx camp, it was too late, they'd already lost too much market share.

This decision from the country that's the cartoon porn industry capital of the world? Goofy. I hope the shareholders "reward" the leadership of Sony for their suicidal decisions.

I actually heard you read somewhere get porn on Blue-Ray in Japan. So maybe there are other hurdles? I heard one French producer had problems getting their discs produced on Blue-Ray.

Just our luck we'll probably have to buy a HD DVD player for the live action stuff and Blu-Ray player for the imported anime tentacle action.

Who needs another dvd format anyways? Im not going to start switching all my stuff for another Sony format. Screw sony even if blue ray is a little bit sharper. What we have now is just fine.

Also, a company name Ritek just showed privately at CES this year multilayer discs that could bump up HD-DVD capacity substantially to as much as 80 GB or more per disc and still maintain compatibility with most current HD-DVD players, erasing one of Blu-Ray's advantages of HD-DVD.

which would you rather have.....80 or 200GB on one disk?

two words: High-Definition

For porn I think DVD quality is all I really care for. I live near LA and I've actually seen some of these people in person...and, with very few exceptions, adding detail to the picture isn't going to help their careers.

I can see maybe using it for the very high-end titles, but when most of the stuff is shot with such low production values...the industry really needs to focus more on hiring better makeup artists and plastic surgeons before they worry about high definition. Nothing like 1080p to make you realize that hot porn star is just the waitress at Denny's with a lot of concealer on.

not just for porn.....for everything. everything is moving to Hi-Def

I realize that...and for most things, I think it's perfect, because they can pull off the realism that 1080p will require. For the porn industry, this is like the move from silent and sound film back in the 20's-30's...a lot of careers will end just because people that look hot at DVD resolution look average at 1080p.

Do you really want to see Ron Jeremy coming at you in 1080p?

i'm still wondering why hardly anyone has talked about blu-ray vs. hd-dvd in terms of entire seasons of tv shows? in comparison to dvd, you can put a whole season's disc on one instead of the 4-7 you are seeing now for most shows. this will probably be the boost needed for the dvd sales of tv shows and other serials to go up the roof. this could perhaps be a death nail to tv networks if say, a web only show goes on blu ray disc. but i see that at least 3 years away, as the first tv shows are just now getting on blu-ray.

The article you sight doesn't mention the adult industry at all. It does however, mention the length of betamax tapes being a key obstacle...they couldn't record a feature length film, which is what both home users and the film industry (adult and mainstream) wanted.

HA! FEATURE LENGTH... :D

HA! COMING AT YOU... :D

Saying the hardware is cheaper for HD DVD isnt really valid anymore either since the Blu-ray hardware is now within $40-60 of the HD DVD players.
I thought the key issue was that Blu-ray disks were more expensive to manufacture because they use a thinner protective layer than standard DVD's, unlike HD-DVD, therefore they are more expensive for the consumer to purchase.

I think dual-format players will become the standard, like combining DVD+ and DVD-, people can buy either type of disks, it really won't make much difference.

Perhaps shorter films/series will be released on HD-DVD, and longer ones on Blu-ray for more money.

My PS3 did not come with a movie (only the first 400,000 did), but I have rented a Blu-ray film from Netflix already (with more on the way next week).

You're not reading the results very well. I'll use my PS3 more as a Blu-ray player due to the fact that I watch more movies than play games. It was the same with my PS2 and DVDs. That doesn't mean I didn't buy and rent a substantial amount of games.

Just because blue-ray is popular in Japan, doesn't mean it's going to win. MiniDisc was widely used there, but not to the rest of the world.

Ha! Ha! That's funny! I live around So Cal. I ran into a porn star working as a "Booth Babe" for a toy company. Her pictures were great but in person she looked like her makeup was applied with a butter knife and some spackle. 480p is about all she can handle.
