When attempting to turn my MacBook Pro on, I get the normal gray startup screen, two differently sized blue screens, then static. I've tried booting into safe mode and removing all login items, but that hasn't worked. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem. Resetting the SMC didn't help. Only safe boot has worked to let my i7 MacBook Pro boot up. Can anyone help me with this issue? It's about a two hour driven to the closest apple store.

I sent my computer in to Apple for repair, got it back, and it developed the same problem after only several days. Out of curiosity, do you guys have jdownloader, Dropbox, or Sugarsync installed?

I had just started using drop box and I have jdownloader installed but I don't use it often.

Boot your computer normally, fix the time, boot in safe mode, check the logs corresponding to your failed boot. You can find logs in Console.app.

Anyone have any ideas based on the above code? The line: "Can't load kext com.apple.driver.AppleIntelMeromProfile - requests to user space are disabled," seems concerning.

I looked through mine and had several of the same flags I'm my log. I have no idea how to interpret the information though. Can we conclude that the problem is definitely software/firmware based? Because Im currently using solely the Windows 7 Boot camp partition without a hitch. I even started up Crysis to make sure the GPU was in full working order. Please someone help us... I hate windoze! :(

I attempted to reinstall Snow Leopard while booted into safe mode, but my computer shut off partway through the install and will no longer boot into safe mode or from the install disc. Any idea how to install Snow Leopard, or at least get it to boot up, without sending it in to Apple?

I'm not sure, it seems funny that it won't even boot from the install DVD.

edit: are you using the same DVD that came with the Mac? I had some weird problems with my core i7 mbp and previous versions of OS X before.

If you are than I think r.j.s. may be right. Mine might be on it's way as well unfortunately :(

I think you are going to have to send it to Apple.

Mr9758 did you have any luck?? I seem to have stumbled onto something while randomly (safe) booting up my near useless Mac.

    "MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update
This update is recommended for all 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro mid 2010 models. The update resolves a rare issue that may cause the system to freeze during startup or intermittently stall during operation, and it improves compatibility with external displays.

The MacBook Pro EFI Update will update the EFI firmware on your MacBook Pro. Your computer's power cord must be connected and plugged into a working power source. When your MacBook Pro restarts a gray screen will appear with a status bar to indicate the progress of the update. It will take several minutes for the update to complete. Do not disturb or shut off the power on your MacBook Pro during this update."

Only problem is upon restart my computer acts up and has the same issue as before. When I go back to check software update, it's as if the update never instslled. Is there anyway around this? Perhaps an alternate update install method? I think I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Sent it in to Apple again and the same problem developed a day after receiving it. I saw the update too but wasn't able to install it. Don't really know what to do at this point.

You should qualify for some type of replacement at this point, no?

When you recieved the laptop did you do a full restore of the image? Or just put the old home folder data back on?

*Also, what happened when you tried to install the update? Mine went through the process but just continued to fail to boot.*

Did a full restore from Time Machine. I've also tried installing the firmware update several times with no luck. The update seemed to install but never actually did. I'm going to try to get a replacement from Apple, even though I have a feeling this is software related.

I agree. I'm going to do a full zero out fresh install, and just add music and movies from my old home folder and see how it goes. Maybe I can install the firmware update then, and tiptoe for a few weeks and hope for the best.

See here and here. It seems to have to do with the System Preferences > Energy Saver > Automatic Graphics Switching setting. If you're getting the static and have the option of connecting an external monitor, that is a way you can get in there to make the change; you can also get in via Safe Boot (hold down Shift when starting up) if you don't have the option of connecting a monitor.
