Sounds like it could be a logic board or graphics card failure. Sounds strangely like the iBooks with logic board failures. Any odd lines appearing at all?

no... just freezing or popping the blue screen... when the video card stopped working there were a lot of odd lines, but now it's normal and suddenly it's not working...

Honestly, just re-apply the Apple updates. This is exactly what we were going through and now it works really well. Just let the updates run by themselves (no running other apps at the same time!).

First: 10.4.9 update: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1049comboupdateintel.html

It will ask for you to reboot. Let it do.

Them do 10.4.9 Security Update 005: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/securityupdate2007005v11universal.html

Again, let it do.

The update froze once on me. I rebooted the Mac and tried again. On the second try, it worked fine.

I don't see how this could void your warranty, so if it doesn't work you can re-install or send it in. Odds of losing personal data are pretty much zero too (you do have a backup of your most important stuff, right?)

I think you could be back in business in half an hour.

I love our Mac, despite very infrequent glitches like these, because they are always easy to get rid of, one way or another.

Regards,

AP

Hey, thanks for trying.

I declared our eMac officially healed at this point. If you still want to try something else (for kicks), go for the other two updates (Quicktime).

Hope you get it fixed soon.

Cheers!

blue screen as well

I too am having the light blue screen fading in every once in a while. Jiggling the mouse makes me feel like I'm doing something, but it really makes no difference. Finally, the screen comes back after a few seconds of blue.

I'm not experiencing any spells of black screen.

Tomorrow night (Wed) I hope to have time to reapply the updates as has been mentioned. I ran that evil Quicktime update on Thursday night 12 July, and the next day found out at work that that update was not recommended because of its "issues." Our IT department was saying it was ok for PPC, but not for Intel Macs. "Too late," I thought.

However, several places on the Web recommend reinstalling the cumulative patch, and that matches the instructions on this thread, so I will do that.

Pretty frightening when the screen goes away!
