Bluesky is rolling out some updates to enhance its notifications system, offering users of the social media platform and X (Twitter) rival a more customizable alerts experience.

First, there's a new Activity Notifications that enables you to receive alerts only for specific accounts, which is useful if you want to keep up to date with a particular friend, brand, or media outlet – like MacRumors, for instance.

Enabling this feature is similar to how it works on X: visit a profile and tap the bell icon to receive notifications every time that account publishes a new post.

Meanwhile, as part of wider notification preference updates, users can now opt to receive notifications only when certain accounts reply to them.

Other new options also include individual alert customizations for new followers, likes, replies, mentions, quotes, and reposts. Each option can be set to apply only to accounts the user follows or to everyone, or they can be disabled entirely.

Bluesky said that its previous "priority notifications" feature has been removed. This feature let users receive notifications only from accounts they follow. To replicate this behavior now, users need to manually set their reply, mention, and quote notifications to "people you follow only."

Bluesky has over 34 million active users, according to the company. That's still a lot less than Meta's Threads in total users, but the platform continues to gain popularity as an alternative to X.

I'll gladly use anything that's not a Meta/Musk property.

BlueSky isn't bad once you know how to use/organize the Feeds you are interested in. I find its reading and writing communities much better than the ones on Twitter. Though it is a shame at once point EVERYONE that I followed on Twitter had moved to BlueSky but few actually kept using it. Guess view and like numbers mattered more than morals for some.

Given screenshots of Bluesky and X side-by-side, can anyone tell which is which? Can anyone even tell they aren't the same app?

I don't think this is an issue with all social media apps looking the same... I can tell them apart from Facebook or Instagram or Snapchat or TikTok or Discord or Reddit. Bluesky looks like such a complete rip-off of X that it looks like they're pleading to be sued - they want the publicity that would come with it.

BlueSky is ok. We crave the early days of twitter before the world went crazy. those days are long gone.

What we crave is social media when it was meant to be social, with people you know, and not a political tool.

That's how I still use it, but I'm in the minority. I don't follow or interact with people I don't personally know.

Same. The only notifications I have enabled are phone, messages and severe weather alerts.

I have a couple friends who have audible phone notifications on for Mail and they walk around with it literally pinging out loud, constantly, all day long, in their pocket.

I couldn't live like that for a day ... maybe not even for a few hours.

I have no clue how they do it.

It's also intensely annoying and distracting to even be around.

It was a good idea but, if the numbers / trend are to be believed, it's a dying service.

Threads and Truth Social seem to be also dying.

Most people seem to be returning to X.

"Notifications = Off" is my default, everywhere, for everything.

I enable notifications very judiciously, so as to not have my attention captured by my devices.
Same. My watch was buzzing every five minutes with crappy notifications, so now I get phone calls, texts, and charges to my credit card. That's it. The digital peace and quiet is amazing.

As just a tiny tangent, this is why some of us small phone folks are so annoyed that Apple won't make one anymore.

We want smaller devices that aren't as "optimized" or "ideal" for constantly using them to consume more and More and MORE.

If Apple were really concerned with our health and wellness, they'd ideally be making some device and software choices that put those values more forward in the design decisions -- at least optionally with a few models.

But, as we know, they have major conflicts of interest in this space, as they make a LOT of money off people who can't stop using their iPhone "attention slot machines".

I think an iFlip is in your future, assuming Apple makes one.

100% it is ... It may be in my future even if they don't make one.

The 13 Mini is at my limit on size in pocket. As it is, it hangs out of some of my shorts and just barely stays in there during my daily walks and hikes.

Last Summer I was using SE1s for this purpose, but I've tried using my main phone for it this year for the better camera. It's only going "ok" so far. I may be going back to SE1 for this purpose soon.

Stupid people are everywhere, but on X I can at least troll them and tell them how stupid they are. And it doesn't matter, if they're on the "good" side or "bad" side.
I can imagine on Bluesky, it's okay to flame and bad talk about the "bad" side, but if you do the same with the "good" side, you probably get your post deleted or banned. 🤔
Lately I got a comment deleted on a videogame site, because I basically wrote, I won't watch any previews for a game (article was about video previews of Donkey Kong Bananza).
