But you know you can buy rechargeable AA batteries don't you? I have a couple sets for my camera and use rechargeable AAA for my Radtech bluetooth mouse.

Sorry if this sounds snobbish but I find that a little antiquated though, don't you? Most portable technology these days is rechargeable... Phones, laptops, iPods... Why should mice be any different? I'd have to buy a recharger and remember to take it with me wherever I go. Why can't I just pull a cable out of my bag and plug one end into my mouse, the other end into a USB/Firewire port and charge the thing? Makes more sense to me.

Edit, no iPod takes advantage of firewire 800. In fact, the latest models of iPods are USB only, no firewire transfer supported.

So there we have it folks, proof positive that USB charges :)

Well, even with the rechargeable phones you still have to have the cable/power brick that takes up the same space as a charger. Plus, with using standard AA or AAA batteries it is very easy to find replacements if you are in a pinch.

Also, most camera's use a proprietary rechargeable battery that usually requires a separate charger as well. The only advantage is that the batteries then are usually a little smaller and more space efficient.

And I guess because most of the older Macs had Firewire 400 and USB 1 - which meant that Firewire was the better choice. Now they have USB 2 I guess there's not an awful lot in it?

Does the iPod transfer even quicker with Firewire 800? And Don't the new iPods come with USB cables anyway, or did I get that wrong?

And on the subject of Mice - trying to find a decent Bluetooth optical one that is also rechargeable seems to be an impossible task! I don't hold out much hope for Apple, I've never really been a fan of their mice and I've used Macs for 20 years. Everywhere I look however, there are wireless mice for sale and they almost always state "2xAA batteries" - what's the point in it being wireless if it's not rechargeable I ask you! :p

I have a iMac G4 and it has USB 2.0 ports, yet my 1G iPod transfers data quicker via firewire 400 than my sisters iPod Mini via USB.

On Mice, well, what Apple needs is a Bluetooth Mighty Mouse. Although some have said it may not happen as it adds weight to the mouse and 'hard' to use.

Ho hum.

Mcally?

This one seems to have potential:
http://macally.com/spec/bluetooth/btmouse.html

Includes a charging cradle. And since it uses 2 AAA rechargables, you don't have to chuck the thing in the trash when the batteries will no longer charge.

I like the mighty mouse, mostly, but getting a right click to register requires a little too much work. The tiny little scrolly sphere wheel has kind of grown on me though, although I'm not sure how or why.

LoopRumors.com claims that Apple is "near completion" on cordless Bluetooth mouse.

well I for one only want corded bluetooth devices from here on out. How hard is it to plug that bluetooth into your computer? Direct connection is where its at...

FireWire 400 has a higher bandwidth than USB 2.0. it's double the speed in the real world, despite FW being 400mbps and usb being 480mbps.

FireWire 800 is supported by iPods only because it's backward compatible with FW400, like USB 1 and 2. Basically, you get no improvements by using FW800, apart from maybe using a port you wouldn't otherwise.

USB 2.0 charges, but only in later revisions - there's still sometimes you can plug in an iPod to a USB port and not get power out of it.

Since Apple dropped the ball on a Bluetooth mouse, RadTech has designed the perfect (for me) Bluetooth mouse with 5 buttons, scroll wheel and charging via USB (!!!).

BT600

And in response to all the USB vs Firewire stuff in here, on the new Intel Macs Firewire 400 and USB2 are the same speed.

thanks for the heads up. have you got this mouse? if so, whats it like? ergonomically? compatability? does it look good "in the flesh"? can we get a review?

i've been looking for something like this for a while.

The only problem with all current BT mice is that they don't have anything like a scrollball (4 way scroll wheels are NOT the same). I'm so used to two-finger scrolling on my PB that I hate using scrollwheels now. I honestly prefer track pads better (never thought I'd say that!) thanks to Apple.

Cordless Bluetooth... is there any other kind of Bluetooth?

Recharge through Firewire? What a waste of a port. Why not have a dock (same as other cordless rechargeable mice) that just plugs into the wall?

So you can't use the mouse when charging ?
How about laptops ?

A wireless/wired combo mouse seems to be the best solution.

Excellent - this looks like just the ticket! Do you have one? What's it like?:)

I've ended up going for the BT600, it looks nice, is white (goes with the MacBook) and Radtech will deliver cheaply to the UK... Probably all told it's cheaper than mose wireless mice you buy in the UK!

nice! that looks like a pretty sweet mouse. yes please tell us how it is once you get it. i might have to invest in one myself.

Here is my thoughts on this. The "Mighty" mouse will come out with a bluetooth option.

What would really be cool would be if the normal mighty mouse had a removable usb cable (like the iPod dock connector) and so when you wanted to charge the mouse or have it plugged in for some reason it would be like a normal mighty mouse but when you wanted to be "wireless" you could unplug the now charged mouse, carry on using it but wirelessly using Bluetooth.

This rumour MUST be to do with the wireless mighty mouse which has been months and months in the pipe line since the corded mighty mouse was realised.

Anyone argee???

I'm sure something like this will eventually appear - but considering the Apple Bluetooth Mouse takes batteries, I can imagine that is what they will do with the Bluetooth Mighty Mouse as and when it appears.

But personally, I've always like a mouse shape more like the (apologies in advance) Microsoft Intellimouse. I like an ergonomic mouse that fits comfortably in the hand to reduce RSI, and gives me more buttons (that are obviously buttons) like the two ones on the side for Back and Forward.

So to be honest, now I've seen this BT600, even if Apple did eventually bring out a Bluetooth Mighty Mouse, I'd probably go for the BT600 anyway. I just hope it works as well as it looks! :)

ooopsie!!

LOL... I must apologise, that's what happens when you do a search for a topic to find out more information, and start replying to it without first checking how old the thread is ;)

:D :p ;)

But then that just goes to show how slow Apple is in getting their mouse technology sorted. I love Apple to the core (groan) but mice ain't their strongpoint, never have been!

And yes - as far as the BT600 is concerned, I will let everyone else here know how well it works. I don't know how much the UK cost is yet because it hasn't appeared on my statement, but hopefully it should be quite favorable considering the good exchange rate at present :)

Well, I must say that my Logitech MX 1000 mouse works great for me, its probably the perfect mouse, but it would be nice not to have to buy mice from companies other than apple.

How about a Mighty Mouse, but the buttons on the side were seperate - left and right, so you could config it to do back and forward like on a lot of the modern Microsft and Logitech mice now do. I think this idea coupled with the ipod style charger on a bluetooth Mighty Mouse would sell very well for the current price of the normal Mighty Mouse.

haha thats hilarious! well they should release one anyway! and soon...

why are a lot of the wireless mice i have seen have to have a usb adapter to work? i thought wireless was suppose to be wire free and help free up ports for other stuff?!
