This may have been going on for a while

Every month or so everything will freeze up - usually during an intensive session of design work
Since I could never operate with the mouse or keyboard - I would force it to turn off by holding down the power button.

I use a mac wireless mouse & keyboard during these occassions.
And today I discovered that I could move the cursor with my touchpad & mbr's keys.
So Bluetooth must be the culprit. I turned it off - but it wouldn't allow me to turn it back on.

And everything comes back to normal on reboot

Is a failing Bluetooth a sign of hardware problems?

Try resetting your PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379

One day, my bluetooth would not turn on and this helped me out.

If that doesn't work, try an SMC reset. This can fix a lot of hardware related issues.

Over time, the settings in the System Management Controller may become unusable, which can result in operational anomalies with the computer. Examples include not turning on, not waking from sleep, not charging the battery, or not recognizing the AC Adapter, among others.
