Not so much an Apple TV question, but it is home theater related and inspired by my experience with the Apple TV.

I have a pair of Sony MDR-1000X Bluetooth headphones. I use them at night to watch Apple TV without waking my wife up.

I’d like to be able to watch regular cable with the headphones but my stupid (Sony!) 2014 TV doesn’t have Bluetooth audio out.

So I want a Bluetooth transmitter, but I’d like to find one that works like the Apple TV.

When I turn on my headphones, the Apple TV automatically cuts the audio signal to my stereo setup. It’s great. No getting up to switch anything.

Most Bluetooth transmitters seem to have a 1/8” headphone jack interface. My TV won’t pass audio to my stereo if there are headphones plugged in, so a 1/8” jack based transmitter would mean I have to plug/unplug it every time I want to switch between Bluetooth headphones and my stereo.

A few transmitters do have optical I/O. My question is, does anyone know of one of these optical I/O models that would automatically restore optical output to my stereo once I turn off my BT headphones, a la Apple TV?

I basically want to plug it into my TV, connect it to my stereo and forget it. It would hopefully just stay on, polling for my headphones, stop audio to my stereo when the headphones are connected, and restore it when the headphones are turned off.

Thanks.

sounds like it's time to take advantage of black friday and update your TV
:D

you could use a splitter for the optical out.
a google search for "optical audio splitter" comes up with quite a few.

Yeah would love a new TV but money and space are limited and I’ve promised myself the next TV will be OLED. The smallest OLED is 55” and I need 49”.

A splitter might work, but wouldn’t that mean manually switching outputs on the splitter?
