Hi there, first post here, but Ive been reading tons of posts from others on this topic, hopefully you can see I've done my research on this topic from what I provide below. None of the solutions seem to work for me!

My first mac here, and I'm a little disappointed with this text.

Explanation of problem: Essentially, images look great, but text looks just a little out of focus, EVERYWHERE. It's pretty frustrating. The picture takes up the whole display, everything else seems normal, but like I said, Text is a little out of focus/blurry. I'm on the latest OSX Mavericks.

    Monitor: HP 2511x

    What I've tried:

    -Hdmi To Hdmi Cable
    -DVI to Mini displayport adapter
-HDMI to DVI adapter (provided in-box)

-Switchresx (Didn't really figure out anything to adjust. My monitor is 1920x1080 at 60 hz, so I shouldn't be in the category of people that need to try switchresx anyways, right?

-Switching overscan off (And I left it off, having it on looks horrible)

-Using the color adjustment tool under "displays"

-Tweaking my monitor's built-in settings, including the famous "make sure it's set to PC, not TV mode" < which that setting doesn't seem to exist on my monitor. Also, Adjusting Sharpness (does some good but doesn't make a large difference with my problem (only the setting 4/5 or 5/5 looks good in the first place, the 5/5 setting makes the text look thin and almost detached and less than 4 makes it look messy and even more blurry)

    -Turning Font Smoothing on/off

-Messing with this font smoothing adjustment script: defaults -currentHost read -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 1/2/3/4/5/

Could it be that this display just isn't cooperating with the mac mini? I have an iphone 5s and ipad mini, and nothing bothers me like the font coming out of my hp monitor when connected to my 2012 mac mini.
I've also used this display for over a year now with my windows 7 PC on the same resolution I'm using it with on the mac mini (1920x1080).

Please, any help or solution would be greatly appreciated.

    -Evan

When you "Messing with this font smoothing adjustment script: defaults -currentHost read -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 1/2/3/4/5/" did you logoff and then back on?

Although not with a mini, but I had similar issue with a tv and asus chromebox...when I hooked up via hdmi to hdmi the fonts looked like crap (no matter the settings...I landed up buying a displayport (chromebox side) to vga (tv side) startech cable...everything looks perfect now.

I bought a displayport to VGA cable today but it's not supporting my 1920x1080 resolution. Thoughts?

Also, I just tried restarting in between running those font smoothing commands. They help a little but still not a complete fix.

Also, this is similar to what I'm experiencing:

Mine supports the same. I'm getting so tired of this struggle.
Bought 2 other monitors today and both have the same slightly blurry issue. Going to return them. The link in my post above is the exact issue im having and its exactly what my screen looks like.
Considering selling my mac mini. So many people have issues with the display and adapter etc, it's a sad thing.
All of these fixes just sort of feel like they aren't getting to the actual problem. And it's pretty frustrating that the vga cable isn't working right with the mac mini either.

the problem is linked to overscan, first go into the monitor menu in the scaling area, it's set to AUTO by default. Select OFF. When you do that you should see that your mac desktop doesnt fill all the screen.

Then go into the mac display settings there will be a slider that says OVERSCAN, the default value for this monitor should be all the way to the right, so slide it all the way to the left. Bang
