like sporty handling cars and can live with the chav factor (at least around here) -> BMW

like comfortable ride and separation from the street and can live with the business-man factor -> mercedes

i'm in the second camp.. i simply see too much apes in need for speed looking 3 series driving around everyday

Audi > BMW > Mercedes

In fact, I'd keep my Hyundai before buying a Merc....nothing that company offers (except the extremely expensive AMG stuff) really appeals to me.

I have had 49 cars in the last 6 years, many of BMW and benz,,,,, I would stick with the Benz in a heartbeat, the BMW are nice cars but always in the shop and at 110.00 a hour gets crazy!

Agree... Sort of half. I love the huge gaping mouth of a grill they put on them these days. However, I'm a VW man myself. Either way, as long as its German and not American your in for a good experience.

Love Vw's but depenabilityis really not good on them.

Nikon or Canon, Hellmans or Krafts, Coke or Pepsi, typical binary good or evil type questions (mmm... part of the culture here) .... ?

I'd enjoy a 1970 280SL Benz but also like the BMW X5

My car criteria ...

Whichever has an iPod connection. If both, whichever sounds the best. If both sound pretty good, whichever is cheapest. Much easier to choose that way. :p

Seriously though, BMW. I wouldn't mind a 6 Series coupé if I could afford one. Hot looking machine.

YES!! I made it to the end of the thread without getting bored, so I get to reply! :D

Personally, I'm too young and broke (college) to look at anything built after the late 90's, so everything I know comes before that :)
I'd go with a Bimmer any day, hands down. I just bought an 1989 325i.
Is she all that pretty? No.
Does she get chicks? No.
Can she beat a tricked out civic off the line? No.
As the Ultimate Driving machine is she crazy fun to take through backwoods winding highways at speeds between 50-80mph? HELLLLL YES.

Bimmers are about the handling and the experiencing of driving. These are not cars, these are machines machines.

The 3 series is the heart and soul of BMW, and I don't think I'd go outside of that. If I was to step up to any other series, like the 5, 7 or X, I'd probably move on (unless it was the new M5, omg...).

I bought a Bimmer not because it's a Bimmer, but because it's a 3 series.

funny that someone mentions the binary good-evil questions we get here. My entire net worth is held in a Mac, a Canon DSLR, and a Bimmer, and they were bought in that order
(and my education)

Please elaborate?

I have VWs ranging from 1981 - 2000 that drive in one of the harshest states and haven't had any "dependability" problems with any of them.

When I say harsh I mean..
- Over 100 degree temperature swings during the year (F)
- high and low humidity during the year
- rain, hail, snow, sleet, fog, dew
- Road salt
- Road sand
- Most likely the most pot holed roads in the nation (besides Detroit!)
- and birds that love to play target practice!

I take it your E46 is an SMG?

-840quadra

Actually, no. It's the Steptronic. I bought my machine off the lot before I had the chance to experience an SMG. I will definitely have it on my next (hopefully M3 Convertible w SMG IV)

I am really liking the 335 Coupe, mmmm Turbocharged BMW 6 cylinder goodness :D ! (the only issue is now their naming convention is pointless IMHO)

-840quadra

You realize the E92 335i rates a tenth of a second faster than the E46 M3 0-60mph?

oooOOOOoooo!

Can't wait to see the 416hp M3.

BMW all the way.
In my opinion, Mecedes cars are uglier, not as good to drive and are only for people over 50 or 60. Also Mercedes have lost a lot of the quality they were made famous for, in an attempt to cut costs.
I would have a BMW over a Mercedes in every category (well, when i'm old enough to drive:D)
My five favorite BMW's are the, M3, M5, M6, then the X5.

Also, can this be made into a poll?

I just took my X3 on a small but steep hump in the grass outside a parking lot, just because. It felt like it was going to tip over, but it didn't so it passed the test! I need to do better things with my time.

We've owned a 5-series BMW for a few years. It's an absolute joy to drive. It's hard to imagine any car having a better road feel in all sorts of driving conditions. Before we bought, we looked at everything else in its class. Nothing else was in its class, including the Mercedes. I've head that the newest 5-series is something of a step backwards, though. I don't know why they'd mess with near perfection but apparently they did.

The previous-gen 5-Series was the best sedan in the world IMHO, especially the 540i. There's just one flaw - over 90% of humankind (including myself) will never be able to afford one. :(

If cost is no object, get the new Audi RS4. Fantastic car. A new M5 or M6 would be nice too, even if they're a bit ugly.

Generally speaking, I prefer Mercedes-Benz over BMW. I own a 1998 ML-320 SUV.

But the BMW 6-series coupes are AWESOME. I'd've bought one, but I got my Audi TT first and couldn't bear to give it up now.

A couple of years ago, I was all ready to buy a 3-Series convertible. Then I went to various BMW dealerships in my area and couldn't get anyone to look at me. It was amazing. I went to five different dealerships and couldn't get anyone to acknowledge my presence. I'm not sure if it was the jeans (but this is Silicon Valley! suits are for bankers!) or my gender.

I finally got one the attention of a salesman at one dealership, and took one of the convertibles out for a drive. I was on the freeway, and had just shifted flawlessly from 5th to 6th, when the salesman looked over at me and said, 'you know, miss, it's easier for a woman to drive an automatic'. I was livid. It's not like I was grinding the gears or stalling out. I know how to drive a manual.

I ended up buying a Mercedes-Benz C320 sports coupe, and I adore it. It's not a convertible, but the panoramic sunroof is the next closest thing. It's got great acceleration (it's not wimpy like its little brother, the C230 coupe) and great handling. I love driving through curving mountain roads in it. Oh, and the dealership experience wasn't nearly as horrific as it was at any of the local BMW dealers.

I am really excited about that too. I am looking to jump into a newer German car in the next year or so. I can honestly say I am having a hard time deciding. BMW is starting to drop some of the initial Bangle bulge on their designs, and the look of the newer unveilings is quite good in my opinion.

The other issue is that I am a die-hard Audi fan, I love and need AWD for my climate, and have always liked their designs, and interiors better than BMW. Most likely because of them being more subtle on their S and RS cars, than BMW's more Boy Racer M line. However I absolutely Love the lines on an M!

I am a freelance journalist and have attended events such as NAIAS Detroit, and other Automotive related media events. I am really looking forward to NAIAS 2007 as it is the 100th year for that show, and it looks like everyone participating (manufacturers) wants to have the "unveiling to remember" this year!

I am Hoping BMW and Audi bring something fun to each of their respected tables!

Ahhhh...

The only German cars I'd consider are the A4 and maybe the 3-series.

The Germans haven't quite figured out how to integrate all the fancy power-operated, touch-screen-activated gadgets reliably. The complexity of the cars has grown by leaps and bounds, and dependability has suffered as a result. Every time the engineers dig themselves out of the latest hole, some new gizmo gets tacked on and throws the whole thing for a loop.

And it seems to get worse the higher up the range you get. The less-posh models are fine but an A8 or S-Class...not so much.

Call me crazy, but I expect a US$75K car to meet the same standards as a $15K car.
