BOE Rumored to Supply iPhone 13 Display Panels After iPhone 12 Failures

LG was picked up as a secondary supplier to Samsung I believe two years ago. Mainly due to Samsung not being able to keep up with production if I recall.
Samsung had no issues keeping up with production. In fact, Apple had to pay Samsung a penalty because Apple couldn't meet purchase targets. https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...-missing-oled-panel-purchase-targets.2245664/

LG was picked up as a secondary supplier because Apple doesn't like single sourcing components because it limits their negotiation power and could put them in a bind if the single source (Samsung in this example) has production issues. Intel was a classic example of a single source holding up progress.

Did you not see this entire paragraph? :)

"Multiple iPhone 12 rumors suggested that BOE would supply some panels for the devices, but BOE ran into major production problems. In June, BOE failed to deliver its first shipment of OLED panels to Apple as displays created by BOE failed validation tests."
that's not an "iPhone 12 failure", that's a QA failure on display manufacturing. very different.

Display manufacturer BOE will be one of the main suppliers of OLED panels for iPhone 13 models, according to a new report today from Taiwan's Economic Daily News.

BOE is said to be working with touch panel manufacturer General Interface Solution (GIS), part of the Hon Hai Group to develop OLED panels.

Multiple iPhone 12 rumors suggested that BOE would supply some panels for the devices, but BOE ran into major production problems. In June, BOE failed to deliver its first shipment of OLED panels to Apple as displays created by BOE failed validation tests.

Samsung Display ended up shipping the panels for the higher-end iPhone 12 models and the iPhone 12 mini, while LG Display made panels for the standard 6.1-inch iPhone 12.

At the time of the failures, BOE's yield rate was around 20 percent, which was not sufficient to meet Apple's needs. BOE was rumored to be working to improve its yield rate, but as of November, was unable to secure a supply order from Apple.

A report from The Elec in November suggested that Apple would revisit BOE's manufacturing facility in Chengdu, China in May or June, and if it passed validation tests at that time, BOE display panels could be used for refurbished iPhone 12 models and perhaps some iPhone 13 inventory.

Economic Daily News suggests that BOE's position in Apple's supply chain has improved, and its OLED technology is now "closer to that of major South Korean manufacturers." The site also says that BOE has now completed certification tests and is manufacturing a small number of displays for the iPhone 12, but it's not clear if that's accurate given the mixed rumors.

iPhone 13 displays are expected to be more technically difficult to manufacture due to Apple's switch to LTPO technology to adopt 120Hz refresh rates on some models, but prior rumors have also suggested that BOE could win some orders.

The iPhone 13 lineup is expected to be identical to the iPhone 12 lineup with four iPhones in 6.1, 5.4, and 6.7-inch sizes, with Apple offering both standard and Pro models. Pro models are expected to feature 120Hz refresh rates, with Apple bringing the iPad Pro's "ProMotion" technology to the iPhone for the first time.

BOE is known to make the cheapest and lowest quality screens in the industry. Shareholders will love Tim Cook; consumers will hate him.

Tim and his margins. No more charging blocks in some products, no more wired headphones. Doesn’t surprise me that Apple would source the cheapest vendor for screens. Not like Apples cost savings will positively impact prices for their consumers.

If I end up getting a phone with a BOE panel I’ll keep returning until I get a Samsung. Chinese crap. Leave displays to the Koreans and Japanese.
Once upon a time Japanese and Korean made was called crap too, you need to wake the F up buddy

I Don’t suspect wired headphones is relevant to display technology. [The transition away from wired headphones is only what every other manufacturer has implemented, in a world where everything is migrating to wireless.] We don’t know the cost of what Apple is paying per unit passed onto the consumer and how that transcends into a cheaper quality display.

Aside from that, does that make any difference to the average consumer? They don’t care about who manufactures what, Apples quality has always been known to be on par throughout the years. I remember when others were bashing LG OLED panels years ago and how look how that turned out.

One could also argue that transitioning to wireless and portless devices is one way to reduce the number of water damage failures. See, Apple is helping us. 😛

Sure, that was like 40-50 years ago. You can wait another 20-30 years for Chinese to catch up.
lol the Tradewars have pretty much confirmed its not 20 years away, if you going to buy a $1 piece of crap and conclude that is the best the Chinese can do then I can't help you. Go look at companies like DJI and tell me who is competing with them. You think the Chinese can't match quality if giving the $1 for $1 cost against competitors. Japan has already lost its title, they are relegated expensive high-quality goods like Switzerland/Italy , they are no longer the ecnomic powerhouse they were in the 80's and 90's. Korea stole that from them through constant innovation and lower prices, their cars are also overtaking Japanese as well. Right now the only rivals Tesla has in the EV space are chinese Ev start ups.
