BOE has long been known for their excellent display technology and quality control. I remember back to the original Thinkpad tablet days, when IBM was sourcing the tablet's display from two vendors, one of which was BOE, and the BOE display was so much better people would do exchanges until they got one with the BOE display.

I’m pretty sure BOE has been the exclusive supplier for MacBook Air for a number of years now, especially after Samsung exited the market. With OLED, it’s inevitable BOE will displace LG and eventually Samsung. Heck, Samsung is using BOE panels on a number of their smartphones.

What does the Modem rumors have to do with this story? Why muddle things up talking about unrelated rumors? Ugh, can I take over your writing MacRUmors, please?

Do your homework lady!

BOE is not "in-house", but a Chinese CCP company that makes OLED panels. Trust me, they should stick Samsung or LG.

It is rather unfortunate, because as soon as BOE reach the minimum quality Apple mandate they will win on price. Partly funded by the state. And you know Apple have been courting them for many years. Not to mention using BOE screen they could save some import tax when their phone are sold in China.

I’ll trust my own eyes as I’ve used 2 phones with BOE displays and they were top-notch, no issues whatsoever.

Keeping this purely tech-based as I couldn‘t care less about the country of origin or political nonsense that will get spouted out here. Quality product for a good price. My endgame. I don’t give a crap where it’s made.

Tim Cook aggressively racing to the bottom to boost profits. Expect more disasters like the iPad mini jelly scrolling and obscene MacBook Pro response times.
Except BOE displays have been in iPads for years at this point and there are no complaints due to them being from BOE vs other suppliers. Apple obviously has their standards when it comes to supplier selection while keeping costs down and I see no reason this time would be any different.

Just bought an LG tv ; never again.

It is too dim in the daylight and too bright at night. The automatic brightness setting is too limited, so I have to change it manually twice a day. Would there be a button on the crowded remote for that ? Nope.

The menus (using WebOS) are a mess with completely different menu systems.

Rushed purchase in lock down after my Panasonic died, which had none of these problems. The end result of the rush to the bottom on price.

They stole so much trade secrets from S. Korea over the years it's really hard to follow. Planted spies on every level in most western countries as well.

"Tim Cook aggressively racing to the bottom to boost profits."

What a silly thing to say.

I've had my new 12.9 iPadPro for a bit more than a week and it is superb. In all aspects.

Good for you. Ironically my 12.9 went back for a screen defect. A straight line of bright pixels about an inch long near the center of the screen.

Be sure to do a full set of tests before your return period ends.

I think you meant “bad contrast ratio.”

Personally, I don't think Apple should be going in this direction !
Apple appreciates your insights. I’ve heard they’ve discontinued any plans to evaluate alternative suppliers who can provide screens that meet Apple spec because “Cosmosent” said so in a fan forum - do you realize they have experts dedicated to evaluate screen suppliers and how they meet specs, cost and quality expectations?

The expansion could spell more bad news for LG after it halted production of LCD displays for iPhones and shut down its own smartphone division entirely earlier this year.
Hilarious how the article tries to paint LG as some beleaguered company. They are king of OLED for televisions. Many of their competitors in the TV biz are using LG's panels in their sets. Dropping smartphone and LCD production let them stop competing with a hundred Chinese companies and focus on the OLED panel tech they are leading the industry with.

I don’t want a BOE display. How can we find out who manufactured our display and return it for a Samsung or LG display?

I consider this to be a very risky move for Apple !

Apple consumers upgrade primarily for TWO reasons:

1.) better Cameras,

2.) a better Display.

Samsung has had the best Displays for many years now !

Apple risks upsetting their consumers who now routinely pay north of $1K USD !

Personally, I don't think Apple should be going in this direction !

And would the general user even care which manufacturer makes the iPhone screen, exactly they don’t, your comment is laughable about “ apple risk’s upsetting their consumers” over BOE displays is laughable

Oh and secondly apple can not solely rely on Samsung ( and generally just one company for screens alone) thank you very much

Amid rumors about Apple's custom-designed modem for its 2023 iPhone lineup, a new report today suggested that the display panels destined for these models could put substantial pressure on LG Display's market share.

According to research by UBI, seen by The Elec, BOE is converting three of its factories into facilities capable of manufacturing OLED panels for Apple. Until now, BOE has manufactured OLED panels for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 at two factories in China, accounting for just 10 percent of all iPhone displays in 2021, but the significant expansion will reportedly allow the company to overtake LG Display as one of Apple's main suppliers of iPhone displays in 2023.

By the fourth quarter of 2022, BOE will expand to reach a manufacturing capacity of 144,000 substrates per month, up from just 96,000 currently. This will exceed Samsung Display's current manufacturing capacity of 140,000 substrates per month, positioning BOE as a serious competitor.

BOE taking a larger share of the supply of iPhone displays could pose a particular threat to LG Display since Apple is its only client for Gen 6 OLED panels, unlike Samsung Display and BOE, which both have a range of other customers and are generally more competitive.

The expansion could spell more bad news for LG after it halted production of LCD displays for iPhones and shut down its own smartphone division entirely earlier this year.

This week, additional reports about Apple's custom-designed 5G modem emerged, explaining that it will be separate from the company's A-series chip and is set to debut in iPhones as soon as 2023. These models could also feature no notch or hole-punch out of the display, an under-display Touch ID fingerprint scanner, and a periscope camera system.
