I have a iPad Pro (3rd gen) all up to date. How do i backup my books in the books app. thanks teqmter

Are you referring to non iTunes purchased pdf/epub? Those, I save in iCloud Drive.

Bookmarks? ensure the books app is sync via iCloud.

I have a Books app question: is it just me or is the 'search ' function in books meaningless? When I try (iPad or MBP) to search an Apple Manual (iPhone OS or MBP) for say 'Screen shots' or even 'index'....nothing! Or just a list of the word as used in the contents??? Try it! Its as if the search function does nothing...or am I missing something?

Downloaded latest guides...and now its working! Not sure it had anything to do with it....think it may have had to do with my not using Books in some time...and some sort of internal (Books) indexing taking place(?). Anyway, thanks for testing and getting back with your results.
