Bookmarks Sidebar

Anyone know how to disable the bookmarks sidebar in Mavericks? Or at least make it work like it used to before the upgrade?

It pops up and stays up and takes away a tenth of the screen. What's more it really annoys me.

View->Hide Bookmarks Sidebar?

Thanks. But it doesn't remove the side bar permanently. Reappears as soon as you click on another bookmark.
