Put rubber balls in the base where the laptop rests, this would allow someone to push the laptop into its dock. This idea's merit comes into play if you have a back on one of the sides, this lets the user push the laptop gently and glide it into a port replicator / dock for an external display

Huh? I can't really visualize what you're saying...

I *think* what (s)he is talking about is a kind of guiding/locking mechanism, similar in design to the way the cap fits onto the iPod Shuffle.

If you look inside the cap of the shuffle there are two little ball bearings which help to hold the cap tight against the shuffle's USB connector... I'm guessing that this is what the previous poster is implying with the rubber balls in the base of the notebook stand (I could be completely wrong though!)

That would make sense...but how could that be applied to the MacBook Pro? The wasy the Shuffle works is that the USB slot has two holes for the bearings so as to hold the cap in place.

I absolutely love this idea. I'd buy one right now if I could :)

The only other thing I'd say is that although it does look a very nice design and shows off the top of the PowerBook or MacBook Pro with the illuminated Apple logo, isn't this actually going to take up more room on the desk (widthways I mean)? Obviously it can't stand in front of your display, whereas with a 'normal' (or no) stand the 'book can sit anywhere on the desk without obscuring your view of the monitor.

This isn't necessarily true in all situations. I'm a student and with the sudden infatuation that my professors seem to have with integrating technology into all assignments I’m forced to have my laptop open constantly which along with all my books and papers leaves little room to actually write anything down on my small dorm desk. I’m working (errrr… i was working… this is why I don’t take my laptop to class… so easily distracted :) ) on some calc right now, and with all the calculation sheets, books, calculators, and the rest of the crap on my desk, I barely have enough room to type. In order to use an LCD right now I’d have to leave the laptop closed, sitting in front of the LCD as dietcokevanilla suggested, leaving little room for a wireless keyboard, let alone my books. With your stand though, my laptop could stand vertically next to the LCD, taking up significantly less space. In other situations I could see putting your stand (even as pretty as it is) behind the LCD.

Ok… sorry about all that poor writing. There’s a reason I’m not an English major. Anyway, I say go for it! Make one. Try it out, see how it works. Worst case you can send it to me… best case, you’ve got a product with broad appeal, a pretty design, and hopefully a reasonable price.

Ahhhh... duplicate post... sorry, I refreshed the screen and I guess it posted again. I'm new around here. Is there any way to delete this, or can that only be done by moderators?

If it's at all possible somehow incorporate a dock into the entire design. Make a mod for an wired power button(I.E: Right in the front on one of the holders) also Kind of a stupid question but what's that font?

Could you also perhaps include a FireLite drive?:p I really do like those laptop stands/docks that make the computer go upright and have a built-in HDD, more ports, etc. but I'm pretty sure that only HP makes them for HP laptops:(. Perhaps an IR repeater could be added too:p?

Hey guys, I had an idea for a vertical notebook stand. I made a mock-up. Tell me what you think. (A 15-inch PowerBook is displayed.)

what happened to the pic at the start of this thread?

A good idea would be if in the dock there was a battery built into the dock. This would keep you from killing your battery when you leave it plugged in for hours.;)

If it is plugged into the wall, do you need to use the battery (it might be a dumb question, but I don't own a laptop........yet :)

See Power Support USA's stand

Sorry to say that someone really did beat you to it. I just purchased it for $45 from Power Support USA http://www.powersupportusa.com/products/macbook_dockingstand.php

Ignore the fact that they call it a docking stand. There is no docking function at all. It's just a vertical place to park your computer.

I like the idea because it will take up less space on my desk. I have plenty of "width" surface area but not enough depth surface area. I intend to have it up next to my monitor, with the Apple facing out the same direction as my monitor. I haven't received it yet (should arrive tomorrow), but when I do, I can report on the optical drive thing. I don't use FrontRow, so I won't be able to comment on that. As far as power and display needing to be plugged in on opposite sides, yes, that's true. However, for my setup it works out just fine because the display will be on one side of the MBP and the outlet is on the other.

I have to say, though, I like your design better, rainmanbk. Much prettier.
