lol @ people saying it's a crime, it's not.

Also, I actually leave my wireless connection open on purpose because I live across the street from a park and I know that people sometimes connect to it to use their ipod touches and laptops and I seriously don't mind as long as they aren't doing anything to slow the network or something illegal who cares really?

Oh, and he is not the only one. A man in the northern subs here in chicago was arrested about 2 years ago outside of a house in a sub-division because he was grabbing a wifi signal without permission.

BE CAREFUL!!!!!

I just read that article, and its times like that when im ashamed to be american. honestly im just going to sleep angry now after reading that. that's why our prison system is overcrowded, because our laws are ridiculous. how can anyone face prison time for this crap? he should have gotten a $100 fine and thats it, if anything. this nazi cop was just going out of his way to find some law that this guy broke. i hope this is isolated. im just disgusted with the lack of common sense. that cop should lose his job.

Where do you live? Because I want to park up my stationwagon beside your house and host several large forums and websites off computers in the back of my car. And I'd like to use your Wifi. Oh and also if I bring my own extention cord can I use your power too? Thanks!

Blah blah blah

That is not legal, you should not be asking here as it is against forum rules...

Dude, shut it, if you do not want to answer the question keep quite. Who made you the WIFI internet police.

Also bear in mind that some access points, whilst not having encryption (meaning that you can connect to them without entering a WEP or WPA key) *will* implement MAC-address filtering.

Therefore, if your MAC address isn't on the 'allow' list, although you may be apparently able to connect to the access point, you will *not* be able to pass any traffic. This could be the symptom that the OP sees?

As an aside, I've had no problems with the WiFi performance of my (late 2007) MBP; I get 'full' strength on my Airport monitor connected to a DrayTek Wireless Router, and I only 'lose' one bar when at the top of the garden (150 feet from the AP).

do bear in mind too, especially when you're in an area with a large concentration of wireless devices, that there are only a limited number of channels available, and if you have too many wireless devices in too small an area, running on the same (or very close in frequency) channels, you can get crosstalk and interference, which will reduce performance to any Wireless client?

Great information, thank you for posting.

so if you forget to lock your front door I can help myself to what is inside your house

same thing really

Uhhhhh, no dude, it is not at all the same. I hate when simpletons like you misuse rules of law and make inaccurate comparisons. First and foremost, if you are not answering the question, shut it. Second, if you do not know what you are talking about, shut it. Third and most important, SHUT IT.

While not necessarily "illegal" in the strictest sense, it's definitely unethical and in poor taste. It's freeloading. He didn't pay for the wireless. Not everyone understands how to lock their network, either, so an open network doesn't necessarily mean "Hey! Feel free to use my connection!"

It is not at all unethical. There is no added cost to the owner who "VOLUNTARILY" left the network unsecure. Every provider gives simple to use basic instruction for locking down WiFi and in almost all cases Lock down is default. Therefore, the user would have disabled this feature to "OPEN" up the network.

Just an option...

IF YOU HAVE 1-4 BARS AND CAN'T CONNECT!

So, I see your problem. You cant load pages, yet your mac shows 1-4 bars next to the sound icon in the top right hand corner. This is a simple problem. To fix it, click on the bars, click "Open Network Preferences", click "Assist Me", click "Diagnostics", click continue, select the wireless network you are having trouble joining, click continue, and watch your safari window load that page!

IF YOU HAVE NO BARS!

If you don't have any bars, your screwed, and probably have the tinniest chance of picking up a small enough signal to login to MacRumors. (LOL)

You have successfully replied and given an answer to the OP who posted it 5 years ago. Great job ;) (sarcasm).

I know I did

The reason I did so was so that people who were viewing the thread would be able to see my answer, if they had the kind (5+ year old) man's question too.
 *Shocker*
