My hard drive from a 2006 Mac Pro Intel Xeon won't boot up on my 2012 Mac Pro Quad Core Intel Xeon.
Hard drive is OS Lion. 2012 is High Sierra.
I assumed it should work. Any clues?

You need Mac OS X 10.7.3 on a 2012 Mac Pro. Is you Lion 10.7.3+, what GPU is installed?

Isn't the 2012 MP basically the same as the 2010, just with slightly faster CPUs? They have the same identifier. So, assuming there's been no firmware update to break this and the GPU is supported, it should run any version of 10.7 and even Snow Leopard.

The other one was someone who thought they had a G5. This person is aware they have an Intel system and posted here anyway :(
It's a little worse on one of the Classic Mac subreddits I frequent. For awhile there was one guy that was pissed I called him out in more than one thread about having a PowerMac Pro G5 (he had a MP).

The other day some guy wanted to sell a 2.66Ghz Quad G5. I questioned him and he's like "I know G5's." Really? Then how is it you've got a Quad G5 Apple didn't make because the only G5 Quad they made was 2.5Ghz - while there IS a 2.66Ghz Mac Pro called a Quad (I OWN one).

Turns out he had the frequency mixed up and it was 2.5. But right, yeah. You know G5s, sure.

People think the details on these things don't matter, but it makes a lot of difference.

Ow... That's bad >.>

PowerMac Pro G5 would be a pretty epc computer tho, ngl :p

Thanks for the replies and I apologise if I'm in the wrong forum. I thought I was in the right one and because of COVD-19 I can't visit an Apple Genius Bar. ( I know, I know. as Sheldon Cooper says, "There are no genius in the Apple Genius Bar")

My GPU is an ATI Radeon HD 5770.

The 2006 is OSX 10.7.5 and the 2012 is OSX 10.13.6.
I thought it should be able to boot up and only thing I could think of is that it's not compatible for some reason.
Do I have to get a 2010 model too and update it, then update to the 2012 from the 2010??

I haven't tried cloning to a hard drive in the 2012 yetyet.

Hi Amethyst1

I'm back to using the 2006 Mac.
When I try to boot the Lion OS hard drive on the 2012 nothing happens. Screen stays gray for ages and nothing seems to be happening.
I have to shut down the Mac and take out the Lion hard drive for it to be able to start with the 2012 hard drive.

The 2006 hard drive has some software that would be a real hassle to reinstall. So I had cloned it to a portable hard drive and wanted to clone it to a new HD in the 2012 model.

I have been told the GPU i have (ATI Radeon HD 5770) might not like OS Lion

I have transferred to the Mac Pro forum

The 5770 is supported from Snow Leopard to High Sierra, so that shouldn't be the culprit. Can you try verbose mode by holding Command-V when the machine boots? That may give us a hint as to what's going on behind the scenes.

I had another go and the 2006 drive booted up on the 2012 Mac and I was able to clone as well.
I have no idea why it worked now and not before...
