So I have a new MacBook Pro 16 after my old trusty mac died rather ingloriously. And for occasional gaming, I am considering Bootcamp with WIN10. The question I am debating if I should partition the internal HDD or buy external 120GB SSD and install it there. What solution do you find better and more reliable?

With Regards Milan

Even thought I use a thunderbolt external on my iMac to run Windows. I would say use the internal drive if possible it is a lot easier to setup. I am only using a external because of space issues on the internal drive.

I looked into making an external Windows boot drive, and never really found a simple solution.

A while back, I figured out a way to make a external Windows boot drive, and i made it, but never tested it. If I remember, I will test it when I get home, just to see if it works.

Basically, I installed Windows using Boot Camp on the internal SATA SSD of my MBP. I then swapped it for another SSD and put the Windows drive in an external Thunderbolt enclosure.

I ended up giving away the computer that this was for, so I never got around to testing it, but I don't know why it wouldn't work.

I am not sure if most people would consider this complex, but I thought it is simple.

While running Windows from your internal drive, it is a good idea to connect your external enclosure such that Windows will recognize it and possibly install a driver for it. Then when you transplant the SSD into the external enclosure it should work. I have external Windows drives on my iMacs and Mac Minis running on the Thunderbolt interface with no problems (used Winclone on the iMacs to transfer to the external drive).
