Bootcamp on External Drive

I'm configuring a 2020 27 inch Imac which I will definitely have to use Bootcamp on from time to time.

The internal SSD's are very expensive on this model, so I hate to pay for a 4TB and partition 1/2 or so for bootcamp.

I just want to confirm that an External fast SSD works well for Bootcamp if I need to and their aren't major gotcha's?

Looks like it works fine, but hate to assume!

you don't have to lose any HD space except for what is taken by Windows and Windows Apps.

Both OS can use any part of any partition..

I keep my most played windows games on my internal ssd and I have have an external ssd for the super large or less played Windows games. That external ssd is also available to the Mac for use.

I played around with this last month when my favorite game dropped Mac Support. As pmiles said actually installing and running bootcamp from an external drive is not simple. I tried, got bogged down, gave up when I came up with the same thought as 4743913.... just install windows on my Mac in a relatively small partition and then put the games whatever on an external storage device. Maybe one day I will try again to install windows itself on an external drive, but for now this works fine.
