I recently created a bootcamp partition for Windows Vista. I mistakenly went with the default of 32gb for my machine. Is there an option to resize this in the future without losing my data?

I was afraid of that. Hopefully Apple gives us more flexibility in the future.

I do have an external hard drive. Do you recommend any software?

No question about that- use the only utility (and it is free too!) that is designed specifically for that- called WinClone which can be found at http://twocanoes.com/winclone/

Be sure to check the FAQ page in their forums at http://www.twocanoes.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=515 for info regarding increasing the partition size.
