Hello,

Running High sierra on an iMac.

Have just started using Bootcamp.

Works well, but gosh, the total routine time to actually bring up
and make functional, Windows is incredible.

Truly just about makes it unusable; a true 5 minutes or so, sometimes even longer.

Was wondering:

Any settings or "tricks" to speed all of this up ?

And, even worse, when re-booting/starting to get into the OS again.

But here, i am pretty sure I know what the problem is:

It's MS WORD and Excel trying to get themselves set.
I am saying "set", as they don't actually start; just bounce up and down in the Dock
for well over 5 minutes, usually. (both are new versions)

All the other APPS seem to set themselves up quickly.

Again, any hints, etc. ?

Thanks,
Bob

Thanks,
Bob

Mbp 2017 boot camped.

5 minutes is crazy long.

If it takes me 2minutes to go from Mac OS to win 10 and starting up Wird and PowerPoint that would be much longer than it actually takes.

Are you running a fusion drive?

My 2017 Fusion Drive spec'd 27" iMac only takes a couple of minutes max to boot into Windows. What do you have installed on Windows? What version? (Home/Pro) and how much disk space did you give to Bootcamp?

At a slight tangent, if you’re frequently switching between macOS and Windows have you considered using a virtual machine instead e.g. Parallels, VMware? If you don’t need the raw performance / hardware direct access of the boot camp setup then it is a good solution and allows you much better integration and switching between running both OS simultaneously.

Hi Folks,

Thanks for help. Nice of you all.

Yes, i am pretty sure I have the Fusion Drive option; seem to remember going for it when i purchased the iMac.

Have no idea how much space is allocated to Windows via the Bootcamp setup.
I believe it, the partitioning, was done automatically.

The Windows is Windows 10, the latest version, Home ed.

Nothing out of the ordinary installed in Windows; actually quite little.

I also have Parallels, but I cannot use it for what I most need Windows for.
I have a shortwave SDR setup that will not run under a virtual Windows; needs the real thing.
The mfg, WinRadio, says it has to do with a very large amount of data flow.

The real "dog" in all of this is the amount of time it takes WORD and Excel to settle down
after re-starting to get back to OS. The icons bounce around in the Dock forever, it seems.

Regards,
Bob

If you click on Disk Utility in Finder, that will tell you how much space is allocated to bootcamp. If it's at it's limit for space, it may be having problems even booting up (if it's borderline at it's limit) so might be worth checking that.

Word and Excel shouldn't be doing anything when re-booting back into OSX, unless you mean into Windows? In which case, turn the settings off for them to load up when windows starts (or the same for OSX if in that).

If you have fusion drive, windows is not going to use the ssd so you are using the spinning hdd. If you need more speed you need to connect an external ssd.

I experienced an immense speedup booting into windows via bootcamp after I ditched the 3TB Fusion Drive and went all flash (1TB blade SSD) in my 27" Late 2013 iMac. Previously would take 4-5 minutes after login for Windows to be responsive, now it is nearly instantaneous. Could also be that the rotational portion of the Fusion Drive was starting to die... that's what prompted the upgrade.
