An issue with a missing .dll file has developed on my Win7Ulti(32-bit) bootcamp drive, and rather than spending hours trying to fix it (I use Windows for the occasional game only, maybe once or twice a week), I figured it may be easier just updating to Windows 10.

Couple of things, though:

- it seems my 4,1>5,1 is not officially supported by Bootcamp for Windows 10
- my Win7 copy is a ...err...let's say...evaluation copy. I want to buy a legit version, any risk in that?
- Also want to go from 32-bit to 64-bit

Since Bootcamp doesn't officially support it, is it possible to just boot up in Windows 7 and do the update in there, or would that mess with anything Bootcamp does? I do want to be able to continue to reboot into Windows just holding down the option key. FWIW, Windows is on a separate physical drive. Is it even possible to update from a 32-bit Windows to 64-bit?

And finally, has anybody successfully installed Windows 10 on their cMP's?
Thanks.

The only thing i'm not sure of is "32 to 64 bit version". So someone else or google might be of better help.

For all other questions, you'll have to look at it like Windows on any regular PC :)
- I've had Win 10 on my old cMP1,1 so 4,1 and 5,1 isn't a problem really.
You'll just have to choose installation method (DVD or USB) and go with it. For USB install you'll have to install it coosing EFI Boot (UEFI installation) and while it is newer way i wouldn't say that it made any difference for me, especially if you use it just for gaming as i am.
- Didn't quite get the question, but don't worry about licenses, they have nothing to do with installation on Mac Pro.
My father had "evaluated" copy of Win 7 on his Vista licensed Optiplex and he without a problem upgraded to Win 10 and now has digitally activated 10 on his account.

Boot into windows and upgrade your Mac to 10 from there, or make installation media, boot into it and upgrade Win7 if you don't want to do fresh install. All things from Bootcamp 5.1 work in Win10 except for HFS driver, but there is a workaround for that too.

And finally, has anybody successfully installed Windows 10 on their cMP's?
Many of us, many, many times! :D

It's been awhile ... but, as I recall, when I "upgraded" from 32bit to 64bit Windows it did require a fresh install ... no easy click and update.

Yes, I have been running Windows 10 on my 2012 cMacPro for some time on a 512GB SSD on a Velocity DUO X2 card.

If it's just for gaming, back up the games, make a flesh install of Win 10 64bit may make your life easier.

You can even install Window 10 via bootcamp, despite it's not officially supported, as long as you burn the disc, the bootcamp assistant can still recognise it and assist the process. But you have to manually install the bootcamp driver after that. Which can be easily done in command prompt as admin.

Older versions of Windows do require a clean installation to convert to 64 bit:

It appears that it also applies to Windows 10:
There is no in-place upgrade path from 32-bit versions of Windows to Windows 10 64-bit. The entire process is a clean install only. You will need to backup your personal files, reinstall software applications, and reinstall hardware drivers. Compatibility is a critical consideration if you decide to switch to 64-bit Windows 10. You’ll need 64-bit device drivers for any hardware devices. Also, there is no 16-bit subsystem in Windows 10 64-bit, which means, your applications must be 32 or 64-bit only. Also, there is no upgrade path to move from the 64 to 32-bit version…clean install only.

(Sorry for the erroneous previous post to the contrary)

Okay... I'm confused. (nothing new)

I've heard several times that Bootcamp does not support Win 10. I have installed win 10 clean several times without using Bootcamp to assist in the install. Then I boot to windows and have had no problems installing the Bootcamp drivers by double clicking the Bootcamp installer program.

Mid-2010 cMP - Windows 10 Pro Creators Update build 15063 - Bootcamp 5.1.5621

I'm curious, what am I missing here ?

I also never had any problems with just double clicking Bootcamp installer on my 4,1/5,1.
With 1,1 I had to run it through command prompt with msiexec (everything from Windows 7 x64 to Windows 10).
But I've never tried Bootcamp 6, just 5.1. Maybe that's the catch...?

Interesting, I can never simply "double click" to install Bootcamp software / drivers. It will show me a window that software is not compatible (bootcamp 5.1). I am start to think it may be language related. (e.g. It can be installed directly on English Windows 10 only).

I can just confirm that i'm always using English language in my OSs, i really don't know if that's the cause though.
