Booted up MBP to this: oops!

(This is what it looked like, this is from google, tho. there was also a small square towards the bottom middle left.) 2020 Intel MBP with current Sonoma. I rebooted and it's fine. Should I do the SMC PRAM reset thingy?

MBP 2020 is Intel or M1? M1 does not have SMC or PRAM. Just turn it off.

SMC reset won't hurt anything. But looks like a hardware issue to these eyes.

I agree. I would suspect that the graphics chip is beginning to fail.
You should run the built-in diagnostics, to see if anything is reported.

hardware failure, probably GPU or monitor cable. No resets will help

If it was a one-time occurrence, I'd just let it pass by and move on.

Do a test:
1. power down ALL THE WAY OFF
2. boot up fresh
3. does the problem recur?

REPEAT five times in succession.
What are your findings?
