Which GoFlex case?

UPDATE: (Clean Install)

It was pretty easy, (I have housed the SSD in a ebay purchased goflex case, so its housed nice and safely). I had to format the drive with the my usb adapter, as the Imac wouldn't see the SSD when it was connected to the Thunderbolt adapter, (restarting with the drive attached may have been the proper fix here).

Installed the OS to the SSD took 25mins to get to registration. I then updated 1.25GB first time then 450.1MB second time. I have been slowly adding software, (only what I REALLY need on the drive). Seems to be working fast and without problems, although I havent been doing anything taxing yet.

My system now boots directly from the Thunderbolt drive, although I'm sure I can change that. Overall a positive experience.

Would you mind sharing which GoFlex case you found and are using? My searches on Amazon and eBay don't yield anything useful. TIA.

NEW SEAGATE 2.5" SATA TO USB EXTERNAL HDD ENCLOSURE CASE FOR HDD DRIVE - apstraders777

Though now I have examined the case again, it is slightly smaller than my original drive and thinner, so I wonder if I am risking overheating the drive by using it in this case.

I think I will start looking for the larger enclosure, (I could always take my own to bits and replace the drive)..... or should the enclosure I have be okay?

Thanks though, donklaus, for making me look again. :)

Appreciate the reply. I have other USB enclosures, but I believe the Thunderbolt adapter connects directly to the drive, so without the adapter or the drive in hand as of yet I'm unsure about how the enclosure wraps around to form a stable mount. That's why I think a Seagate enclosure is the way to go.

The seagate enclosure I have has a small metal section that the back end of the drive slots into. Four screws are fitted to the SSD and rubber plugs fit onto the screws. The plugs slot into the bottom of the enclosure holding the drive in place, (the top section is then clicked into place). I hope this makes sense?

As you know the Thunderbolt adapter has the SATA connectors, so you can plug it in bare, although there is a gap underneath. You could DIY it......

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1317577/

Strangely, I also have the Desk adapter and built a support for bare drives, using the shipping box and a little glue - keeps the drives nice and stable.

I suppose I thought that the enclosure would be the safest way to set up the drive, but like I say, I am a little worried now about the suitability of this smaller enclosure with the SSD. (I've asked philipma1957 for advice. Seems to have a great deal of experience testing SSD's and the Thunderbolt adapter). Hopefully, I will be confirmed as a compulsive worrier, and will again be happy using the drive.

I'm confused now.

So you can plug the Thunderbolt cable straight into the SSD?

In that case do you get 6Gbps? And if so why would you use a 3Gbps enclosure then?

Erm, sorry was that me, spreading confusion? Welcome to my world. :D

The Thunderbolt cable plugs into the Seagate Thunderbolt adapter. The adapter uses its own enclosed hdd's, but since it uses SATA, any 2.5" drive can be connected.

If you goto the thread I linked to in my previous post, you will find lots of information about the adapter, (it includes pictures which should instantly clarify things).

Hope that helped, either way I'll stop, before I make things worse. ;)

Update: Philipma1957 has suggested there is no real need for an enclosure with the Seagate adapter and since I'm still concerned about the airflow of the SSD I may just go DIY after all! Was a little concerned about giving the SSD that extra protection, but am more worried about excess heat. Live and learn I suppose.

CCC bootable SSD drive, from seagate TB, not mounting drives

I'm having some issues after booting from the SSD clone (using CCC). I can't seem to mount any drives, including the internal HD. Disk utility comes up with "the disk 'Macintosh HD' could not be mounted'... for every drive...

Do any of you have this problem? Verify and repair disk give a clean bill of health on every drive.... very strange.

I can't seem to find anyone else having the same problems mounting off the SSD from a seagate thunderbolt adapter. :(

Cheers

Troy

It's all good! Fixed!

It was the version of CCC that I was using that wasn't allowing the mounting of the drives. A user on the CCC forum had the exact same problem and the developer posted the latest version.

Hi Guys,

Having a real problem trying to get my set up to work!

I've got a crucial m4 that i copied my OS onto, but the drive is really intermittent, it appears and i can boot from it but then turn it off and on again and it can't find the drive.

Is this an issue with my drive?! shouldn't have any problems as its only a couple of months old.

Just to confirm everything is plugged in correctly etc.
I've tried booting via the thunderbolt enclosure, and also via usb just to see if it is an issue with thunderbolt. Made no difference.

Thanks!

Has anyone attached a Samsung 840 Pro to the Seagate GoFlex Desk Thunderbolt Adapter? It sounds like a fast combo, but I'd like to see some benchmarks

Probably won't matter.

The TB adapters are SATA2 at the moment, so a Samsung 840, a Crucial m4, and any of the Sandforce drives will all top out around the same speed. Buy whichever brand you trust, or can get the good deal on. (I personally use a Crucial C300 and m4. Just got a Sandforce (Sandisk) in the mail but haven't used it.)

The random read/write speeds might be wildly different on benchmarks, but even so, most users will not be able to tell the difference.

I don't have a desk GoFlex, but have tested with the portable Thunderbolt GoFlex adapter, which another poster with both indicated were the same speed. There are many tests posted on various threads here.

Here are my results with a 256GB Samsung 840 Pro and a 256GB Crucial M4 SSD drives:
