I need instructions as to how to boot up in safe mode, please.

hold down the shift key while you boot

At power up or restart, as soon as you here the bong, hold down the shift key and keep holding until you see the grey screen with the spinning gear. Then you can let go of the shift key.

Note, a safe boot takes much longer than a regular boot since the system is deleting some cache files and running a file system check/repair. When finished you will get a login screen with "Safe Boot" in red.
