This is quite sad for all store employees and frequent visitors alike. The Borders just across the street from my house is expected to start its liquidation sale as early as this Friday.

During the last round of liquidations in our area, it was not until 30% off that prices approached those of B&N. It was not until ~60% off that prices got to the Amazon level. It's no wonder they stuttered. And yet those bright yellow signs got people buying.

When they were bought by management that had no idea about book-selling, an made several bone-headed decisions years ago, they were doomed.

Here's the strange "kicker"...

The Borders in my town put the Crown Discount Books out of business. People in my area would rather pay full price for a book from Borders over the same discounted one across the street...

I guess that mentally still stuck even after Amazon came around...

Yeah, that really sucks. The only saving grace is that this ensures job security for Barnes and Noble employees

for now.

I am sad to see Borders go. Between Barns and Noble and Borders I liked Borders a lot more.
Price wise they cost the same for books here but I just liked the feel and lay out of Borders a lot better. Plus the coffee place in the store is a hell of a lot better than Star Bucks.

Yeah, that's really funny... You'd have to wonder, is there some sort of stigma attached to buying "discount" books? Either way, makes no sense...

I completely agree. Our borders here was awesome, I would frequent it for the coffee and to check outnew books.

(side note Seattle's best is owned by starbucks, but it still much better)

I think in the end, Borders should have aggressively rolled out its own branded version of the Kobo e-book reader and set up a very prominent display in front of the store to show people what the Borders-branded Kobo reader could do. Borders could have used to Kobo device to drive people to the physical store like what Barnes & Noble does with its highly successful line of Nook e-book readers.

By the way, I do think Borders will be revived in some form--probably as a small, regional bookselling chain based mostly in the upper Midwest (e.g., Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Indiana).

That would've been nice. At the Borders I went to, they just stuck the Kobos in boxes on a small table near the front of the store next to the new books. The Kobos are ugly too and look like first gen Sony E-readers.

Meanwhile I can go to the Barnes N Noble in Glendale and they have 4 tables of Nooks on display to try out, a wall of accessories, and a dedicated salesperson to answer questions. Big difference.

My local store closed a while ago, which was a shame because we liked going there occasionally. It had a quiet, 'library' feel to it which I liked.

Are you talking about Books-A-Million? Sort of a modern day Crown Books - that would be payback, I guess...

The Borders in my town was sort of always gross - never well kept and the bathrooms were scary. The newer independent one up the street which is a used/discount store is awesome...

As expected, the one near my house is officially closing. Today was the "first day" of the sale and all of the books are 10% off. They increase the discount as the days remain.

20% off Books and Video, 40% off Blu-ray (but BR's retail are out of this world).

The retail person said that sales will last a while as they will be open until the end of September since this time, they have to empty out all the warehouses (not just shuffle product around like last time).
