And does this mean that we should getting from the first batch because they still have the better quality-but-more-expensive 'old' setups or should we wait for the new driven-down-in-price-by-Tim-Supplychain setups?

They should be upgrading the main camera on the 16 promax with a better sensor, etc. seems like they’re just upgrading the ultra wide lens and the telephoto lens. I care more about the main camera.
They know you do. That’s why they don’t do it. The main camera has only 1 upgrade making a noticeable difference left the next five years probably. They have to spread it out.

"have to" :) But yeah, I get your point.

I am (or was) definitely hoping for 10x.

The main camera apparently is getting a 14 bit A/D converter to sample its sensor output. That should (ideally) allow for more subtle variations in sampled light. And result in more nuanced photographs.

A big plus.

If quality goes down with the Foxconn and Cowell manufactured components, I’m sure we’ll read about it here and on other sites. Just to be safe, maybe it would be wise to buy one before Christmas.

Sigh. I’m still on an iPhone XS because I absolutely hate the overprocessing on newer iPhones. But my phone is dying and I’ll soon need to upgrade. Now, in addition to worse looking photos, I’ll also need to deal with the loss of a mid-range tele. Having nothing between 1x and 5x is crazy. Digital crop at 2x on the 48mp looks worse than the 2x tele in my 6 year old XS.

I suppose I’m an edge case, but it’s just so painful to know that when I spend thousands of dollars on my next phone it will feel like a downgrade.

Isn't there also a 2x optical since the 14 Pro's? The Apple compare webpage shows 0.5x, 1x, 2x and 5x optical for the 15PM, likely soon to matched on both the 16PM and 16P.

Not just previous years tech but previous years parts. If you think about it, it’s a great way to make sure they don’t waste anything… I bet that’s why and how Apple came up with Apple Watch and Apple TV haha.
